Democratic Party of Torrance County Newsletter

January 13, 2025

Good morning, Democrats!

Like the floating head projected on the curtain in the Wizard of Oz, telling Dorothy to pay no attention to the man behind the curtain, Trump and his surrogates are busy trying to make a case for forcing Canada to become our 51st state and taking control of Greenland and the Panama Canal, by military force if necessary. Would Trump actually be stupid enough to try to annex foreign territories against their will? Quite possibly he’s stupid enough, but it’s far more likely that this is just misdirection, like the carnival con man or illusionist who gets his audience to pay attention to one hand while the other hand is actually doing the trick.

Trump’s inflammatory bombast diverts attention to things that are really happening, like the meetings to push forward the nomination of completely unqualified, and in many cases dangerous, appointees to head up key federal agencies like the Departments of Defense, Education and Health, Education and welfare. Hopefully, our elected officials in Congress will do a better job of watching the hand behind Trump’s back than the press has been doing.

On a local level, we will have our first Monthly Meeting of 2025 just six days from now, on Sunday, January 19th. It will be a1 PM Zoom-only meeting (a rarity for us) as Dennis is out of the country and I don’t know if I’ll be up to traveling to any sort of venue beyond my own desk. I don’t expect it to be a long meeting, but there are some fairly important things to discuss. Look for a Special Edition of the Blue Beacon on Saturday for the Agenda, a link for the Zoom meeting itself and possibly for links to some related documents for the meeting.
