Democratic Party of Torrance County Newsletter
January 19, 2026

Hello Fellow Democrats and Antifa Thinkers,
Well, it is just another week in the land of DJT with more chaos, more confusion, more heartbreak, more breaking of Constitutional Law and the list goes on and on and on. And that my fellow Democrats is the very reason that we are working hard to turn Torrance County BLUE! We did a lot in 2025 and we must keep working it in 2026. We must keep making our presence in Torrance County known and putting our best foot forward. Our office is starting to get more foot traffic; the Facebook page has a little more traffic; I don’t know for certain, but I think the website is also seeing more traffic. This activity is very encouraging, but sadly, it is powered by the fact that people are feeling the pinch in their wallets of DJT’s tariffs, we are all feeling the sadness in Minnesota and not to mention the stress of what may happen with Greenland. These feelings may not go away anytime soon, and I’m sorry to say it may get a lot worse before it gets better.
For those reasons and many others, we are now on a march for a major fundraising event that will bring us enough money to make a significant deposit into the ongoing Billboard Fund, pay for some much-needed electrical work in the office, fund some Get Out The Vote action, phone banking, text banking and political newspaper ads.
You may have seen the ad in last week’s issue of the Blue Beason about the Denim & Diamonds Fundraising Event for April 19th. We are inviting you and the public to a Sunday evening of “meet the candidates”, political speakers, dinner, live music, and dancing. We are doing our best to bring in candidates who are running for office so that you can have conversations with them to help you decide who to vote for. We have a capacity of 260 people for this event and more as “standing room only.” We need your help to pull this thing off! I have so far secured $4500 in sponsorship commitments, and I am working on securing more. It costs a lot of money to put these kinds of events on, and I am asking each and every one of you to purchase a ticket, plan to attend and bring someone with you. All you have to do is click on the QR code in the included flyer and make your purchase. If you can help get the word out, stop by the office and pick up flyers, distribute them everywhere and to everyone you encounter. If you know of someone that might want to help sponsor the event, please have them call me, my number is below. We also need volunteers to help us set up and takedown, call Millie and get your name on the list if you are willing to lend a hand. We need all the help we can get! A successful event will make a big difference in turning Torrance County BLUE!
PLEASE JOIN US APRIL 19th AT 4 PM FOR DENIM & DIAMONDS FUNDRAISING EVENT!
Stand Up! Push Back! Continue the Fight!

TRUMP LIES ABOUT EVERYTHING!
Refute the Republican Rhetoric
By Bill Peifer
At a rural health “roundtable” at the White House on Friday, Trump took the opportunity to slam New Mexico’s election processes without justification, calling our elections "among the worst in the nation". Of course, that had nothing to do with healthcare, but staying on topic has never been Trump’s strong suit. Of course, he’s not exactly strong on the truth and basic facts, either. "They've got to clean up their elections in New Mexico because those elections are so corrupt it's incredible." Trump continued stating "If they clean it up, we win by a lot. But they are really corrupt elections."
Let’s start with that last sentence where he implied that if our elections had more integrity he would have won “by a lot”. Here’s the reality. Kamala Harris won New Mexico by a margin of 55,411 votes. That’s an awful lot of cheating if anyone is to believe that Kamala got tens of thousands of illegitimate votes or that somebody had thrown away tens of thousands of Trump votes. Cheating on that level would have been making national headlines all day the day after the election. Lawyers would’ve been crawling all over the state and federal prosecutors would’ve been arresting half of the county clerks in our state.
But the purpose of this column isn’t to dwell on “what-if” situations, but rather to arm Dems with facts to use in “friendly discussions” with MAGA family, friends and neighbors, so let’s set aside Trump’s obviously absurd claim that he would’ve won New Mexico at all, much less “by a lot”, and talk about New Mexico’s level of election integrity.
Various organizations rank states by varying criteria when it comes to evaluating election integrity. The Heritage Foundation, authors of Project 2025, are probably the most conservative organization that bothers to rank states. They lean heavily toward things like showing ID every time you vote, providing proof of residency and proof of citizenship and taking points off for allowing mail-in voting and “no excuse” absentee voting. They rank New Mexico 37th out of 51 (including Washington D.C.). Not great, but certainly not “so corrupt it's incredible”.
The independent non-partisan Election Integrity Project disagrees with the Heritage Foundation. They use somewhat less draconian and outdated standards and their analysis ranks New Mexico 5th best. And then there’s the esteemed Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) with their Elections Performance Index. MIT’s EPI is widely considered to be the “gold standard” for election integrity analysis around the entire world. Where do you suppose THEY have New Mexico ranked for election integrity? Your right-wing friends will be surprised to learn that we are NUMBER ONE in the country on the EPI. Top of the list, right ahead of Michigan, Colorado, and Vermont. For what it’s worth, the four worst states are Louisiana, Wyoming, Arkansas, and Mississippi, four of the reddest states in the country.

Looking for Democrats to run in 2026
With the 2025 non-partisan elections behind us, the DPTC is now looking at the 2026 Torrance County elections. These elections are partisan, but in the recent past there have only been Republicans on the ballot for the General Election since it’s been difficult to persuade Democrats to run in a county where it’s perceived that only Republicans can win. Because of this perception, there have been times when Democrats want to run, but feel that they have to change their party affiliation to “Republican” to get elected. In 2026 we’d like to change this perception, but we need brave Democrats to step up and “put their hats in the ring”. Here are the positions that will be up for election in 2026 along with the estimated annual salary:
County Commissioner District 1 – Pays $27,570.
County Commissioner District 2 – Pays $27,570.
Sheriff – Pays $72,164.
Assessor – Pays $70,031.
Probate Judge – Pays $24,180.
Magistrate Judge – Pays $79,537
All of the salaries shown are the current salaries which will likely go up slightly with a “cost of living” increase at the first of the year. The DPTC stands ready to assist you as much as possible, should you choose to step up and run for one of these positions! Contact Bill Peifer if you have any interest in running.
