DPW Building Solar Project Ribbon Cutting:
|
|
Join us for a ribbon cutting and information session about the 199.9 kW solar panel system atop the Department of Public Works on Wednesday, September 25, 2019 at 11:00 am. Light refreshments served.
The project is funded through a combination of Village funds and a Focus on Energy RECIP grant in the amount of $82,809. The project has an estimated 25 year lifespan and an estimated capital payback time of 7 years. Over the 25 year lifespan of the project, the Village will save over $620,000.
Expected annual kWh output is estimated at 268,188 kWh and a power monitoring system will be installed to watch overall production and weigh it against the estimated projection for accuracy.

The Ad Hoc Teardown/Rebuild Committee will reconvene on September 23, 2019, at 6:00 pm. Comprised of four resident volunteers and two Village Trustees, the committee held five meetings during 2018. Reviewed topics included residential design guidelines, zoning requirements, ARC processes, and specific teardown/rebuild reviews.
After completing its review of the aforementioned topics, the Ad Hoc Committee made several recommendations that were adopted by the Village Board in December 2018. Key among those changes were procedures aimed at increasing transparency, improving consistency and providing Architectural Review Commission (ARC) members with data points to assist them in analyzing the scale and massing of proposed structures. The full list of adopted recommendations is available on the Committee page of the Village website:
http://www.wfbvillage.org/343/
At its meeting on September 23, 2019, the Committee will examine how the revised processes, requirements and other changes have impacted the review of residential rebuild projects in the six month period since the changes took effect.

Continued Progress at Silver Spring Park!
|
|
Come visit Silver Spring Park (corner of Lake Drive and Silver Spring) to see the wonderful changes that are happening there. This joint project of the Village and the Whitefish Bay Garden Club will create a bio-retention pond and a rain garden. These infrastructures will capture rain water to retard runoff to Lake Michigan.
Lake water is at its highest levels in years. Preventing water runoff from entering sewers and the lake is important. These green infrastructures are planted with native plants to secure the soil and absorb water with their deep roots. Native plants have the added benefit of attracting pollinators whose habitat has been rapidly depleting. Signage will explain the functions of these infrastructures and plants. These water retention structures and the native plants selected serve as a model for residents to use on their properties to help retain rain water where it falls.
The construction of Phase I will be completed in mid-October. The last update of the park was done in the mid 90’s. This project will be the first of several phases to update the park to create a beautiful and sustainable area for the Village.

Grass Seed and Soil Amendments - Tips from the Whitefish Bay Garden Club:
Many Whitefish Bay lawns have full sun in the front and full shade or dappled shade in the back. Your lawn will look its best next year if you use the right kind of seed this fall rather than using a “one size fits all” product. Get a sense of how much area you have to overseed for each of the light conditions. In other words, estimate the square footage for each area.
For full sun, kentucky bluegrass does well. It is a rhizomatous grass. That means once the grass establishes itself, the plants will continue to propagate by sending out shoots in the soil, creating a thick web of roots underground. This is the grass that is used to create rolls of sod. It is also the grass that is used on playing fields because it has a tendency to heal itself when rips and tears result from sports activity.
For shade, turf-type tall fescues do well. They do not self-repair, but do require less watering and can be purchased in “No Mow” blends that demand less maintenance overall.
For small damaged areas you can buy small quantities of seed or patch kits, but if you have an entire lawn to overseed, then it is better to buy your grass seed from a nursery and buy the specific blends that are suited for the light conditions of your lawn.
Lastly, you will want to prepare your soil this week with any necessary soil amendments. If you had your soil tested already, you can head to the nursery to buy the right amendments. If your pH is around 6.5, you are good to go. The other readings will be related to nutrient levels (N, P and K). It is best to go with organic or natural soil amendments as they release their nutrients slower. The local nursery will be able to help you evaluate your soil test results and assist you with the right amendments for your lawn. To determine the appropriate quantities of seed and soil amendments, they will need to know your square footage estimates.
Next week we will plant those seeds, but go ahead and amend your soils this weekend.

Did you know? September 15-21, 2019 is National Child Passenger Safety Week. The goal is to make sure your child is in the correct car seat, that it’s properly installed, used correctly, and that it’s registered with the manufacturer to ensure you receive important safety updates. Some studies have shown that approximately 75% of child safety seats are not installed correctly. If you are an expectant parent, give yourself enough time to learn how to properly install the car safety seat in your car before your baby is born to ensure a safe ride home from the hospital. Car seat information is easy to find, but often it’s difficult for parents and caregivers to decide which seat is best for their child.
Follow these tips to ensure your child is in the right seat:
