UPDATE: After School in the Yard

I am extending the time on the yard at dismissal for socializing and teacher check-ins to 2:10pm. This will provide 20 minutes for parents/guardians to check in with teachers and for parents and students to socialize with each other.

First Grade Needs Used Building & Construction Sets
The First Grade would love to help anyone out there who has outgrown their building and construction sets, like LEGOS, magna tiles, tinker toys, KNex, Magnaformers, Gears, etc., by taking them off your hands!

If we cannot use them, we will donate to the new STEAM lab for the other grade levels to use.

Thank you.

Friends of the Urban Forest Planting Trees
Miraloma is excited to partner with Friends of the Urban Forest over the next 2 weeks to plant 7 trees in the upper yard: 4 Catalina Ironwoods and 3 Island Oaks!

The 4 Catalina Ironwoods will be near the building providing much needed shade for the east-facing classrooms and the yard. The 3 Island Oaks will be planted in the new beds on the east side of the upper yard between the benches.

Thanks to our Garden Teacher, Danny Palmer, and Garden Committee chair, Geoff Coffey, for being part of the process that made this happen!

JAN 11-21: Read-a-Thon 2016!
The annual Read-a-thon (RAT) started Monday and runs through Wed, Jan 20 @ 9pm! This year the RAT is a 10-day period when students track their reading and win prizes for the minutes they have read. The event emphasizes reading in a way that creates magical and long-lasting memories for all students. We are excited for you all to be a part of it!

What Counts
Reading anywhere, anytime, on paper or a device, to yourself or to someone, or having someone read to you. It can be graphic novels, picture books, chapter books, magazines, newspapers, or even audiobooks!

All students who participate will receive a small token of appreciation. Classes with the highest minutes read per student will receive an additional prize and are distinguished at morning circle by Mr. Bass. Readers can also earn individual Dragon Club awards!
  • Bronze: 600-895 (1+ hr per day)
  • Silver: 900-1195 (1.5+ hr per day)
  • Gold: 1200+ (2+ hr per day)
Reading Logs
Logs were sent home in your child's backpack. Extra reading logs can be downloaded from our website. Logs must be turned in ON TIME (Jan 21) and with the logged minutes totaled at the bottom of each sheet.

See the Read-a-thon web pages for more details.

jan18compJAN 18: Celebrate National Compliment Day!
Learning and understanding how to give and receive a genuine compliment is a social skill that is often forgotten, or is not given sincerely in our ever-busy world. Words of appreciation or thanks, that are communicated in a sincere and specific manner, go a long way toward building and maintaining positive relationships with others.

Two of the Room 5 student Social Skills groups have been working on the art of giving and receiving compliments. Sunday, January 24th, marks National Compliment Day for 2016 and we would like to share some of what we have learned and practiced with the school community. If you'd like to participate we will have information and materials posted outside Room 5, the week of January 18.
