Network Updates

Join Lower Shore Land Trust, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and other Delmarva Restoration and Conservation Network partners for a series of film screenings around the lower shore, highlighting environmental change in the Delmarva Region.

The first film "Salted Earth," took place in April at Salisbury University. The second film in the series "Delmarva and the Ground for Change" took place July 25th at the Marva Theater in Pocomoke City. The third (and final) film in the series "Water's Way: Thinking Like a Watershed" will take place September 24th at Pemberton Historical Park, featuring a question and answer panel with the film's writer Tom Horton and project highlights from Shore Rivers!

We would love your help in spreading the word!

FloodVision and the Edge of America Tour Stops in Maryland

The Climate Central Team recently stopped in Maryland for their Edge of America Tour. Maryland DNR CCS and MD Sea Grant met with the Climate Central Team August 21 to see the Flood Rover and learn more about the tour. Climate Central conducted short interviews (3-4 questions) on camera collecting MD specific stories on climate impacts in communities and involvement in resilience work.

The scientists at Climate Central recently developed FloodVision, a tool that provides photorealistic visualizations of potential future flooding and precise entry-floor elevation measurements of buildings and structures.

Precise elevation data and flood modeling information can be challenging to convey and hard to understand for most people. Visuals of local, recognizable landmarks–the schools, parks, grocery stores, and businesses that are part of daily life–can often tell the flood risk story in a more powerful way than maps. The science-based visualizations can be rendered to show different time frames, emissions pathways, flood frequencies, and water levels.

Climate Central kicked off the Edge of America Tour in early June in Maine, and are now driving the FloodVision vehicle (nicknamed the FloodRover) past locations of interest along the East and Gulf Coasts all the way to Texas by the end of the year. Along the way, they are meeting with community leaders, government officials, and scientists to share their climate and resilience stories with Max Grater, the field producer and pilot of the FloodRover.

Here are some of the story maps they’ve produced from their journeys in MaineNew Hampshire, and Massachusetts

In a few weeks, the Climate Central team will get back to Maryland DNR CCS and MD Sea Grant with the processed visualizations of flood risk for communities on the Eastern Shore.

Second Round of "Marshes for Tomorrow" Community Engagement Meetings in August and September

The Marshes for Tomorrow Community Engagement Team has embarked on a second round of Community Meetings. Since the first round of meetings in January, the Marshes for tomorrow team has developed a set of models to guide decision making and prioritization for marsh restoration across Maryland's Eastern Shore. Check out the models here!

During this next round of Community Meetings the MfT Team will be sharing these models with community members, reviewing the progress of our Marshes for Tomorrow project, sharing how community input is being incorporated into restoration planning, and discussing our next steps.

Please join us on 15 October (9:00am –11:00am) for the Chesapeake WILD Roundtable Fall meeting and celebration of this year’s highly competitive and successful Chesapeake WILD grant cycle, including a few highlights, lessons learned/growth, and near future work direction.

This time together is also an opportunity for us to again ask partners and grantees for their feedback to refresh the next RFP and continually improve our process to ensure equitable access to Chesapeake WILD grants.

Our vision is of a healthy, interconnected network of land and water that supports vital fish and wildlife resources and connects people with nature for recreational and other human health benefits. To achieve it, the individual, place-based conservation and restoration actions we take - and the projects we fund - must be cumulatively connected in ways and at scales that also support regional and national goals. Help us align our collective funding and work to support one another, and to support our shared purposes across local, regional, and national scales. Help us make Chesapeake WILD grant-making better connected, more strategic, and equitable!

More details, RSVP link, and an agenda will be shared closer to the meeting date. Please feel free to share with your networks. Questions? Contact Faren R. Wolter at faren_wolter@fws.gov

About the Delmarva Restoration and Conservation Network (DRCN)

The Delmarva Restoration and Conservation Network (DRCN), formed in 2017, is a collaborative of local, state, and Federal government agencies and NGOs working with private and public landowners and local governments to identify the most important places to protect and restore, and to obtain support and funding for voluntary restoration and conservation.

The DRCN Mission is to restore and conserve Delmarva’s landscapes, waterways, and shorelines that are special to its people, fundamental to its economy, and vital for its native fish, wildlife, and plants.
