New Eastern Shore Initiative for Regional Trails Awarded Technical Grant by National Park Service | |
The Eastern Shore Regional Trail Network has been selected by National Park Service Rivers, Trails and Conservation Assistance Program (NPS-RTCA) as a 2023 “community assistance project.”
The designation means that this recently-formed, Shore-wide consortium of partners, led by Eastern Shore Land Conservancy, will receive support for one year in the form of invaluable, one-on-one expertise and technical support from knowledgeable NPS-RTCA staff.

NRCS DE can now fund 95% of appraised value on Wetland Reserve Easements | |
NRCS DE just received a GARC package which will allow them to cover pay 95% of the appraised value for a Wetland Reserve Easements (WRE): up to $11,450/ acre in NCC, $16,866/ acre in Kent County and up to $13,203/ acre in Sussex County.
The hope is to expand the WRE program, which pays landowners for an easements on private property and covers the cost for design and restoration of hydrologic function on previously drained agricultural land.

This year's Chesapeake Bay Blue Crab Winter Dredge Survey, a cooperative effort between MD DNR and the Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS), estimates 323 million blue crabs in the Chesapeake Bay.

Virginia Land Conservation Foundation Grant Funding
The Virginia Land Conservation Foundation board of trustees met on May 16, 2023, to open the FY24 grant round to fund land conservation projects.
A total of $14,125,389 is available for grant funding as follows in the following five categories: Farmland Preservation, Forest Preservation, Historic Area Preservation, Natural Area Protection, Open Spaces and Parks. Qualified land trusts, Virginia Indian tribes, localities, state agencies and soil and water conservation districts are eligible to apply.

The Virginia Outdoors Foundation (VOF) and Wetlands Watch have partnered to offer grant resources through the new Coastal Resilience & Trees Fund (“Fund”). 2023 serves as the inaugural year of the Fund, which provides grants for projects that seek to achieve increased resilience to flooding, sea level rise, and extreme weather events in Virginia’s coastal communities. A portion of the Fund will provide resources for increasing tree canopy in the coastal zone. Projects can vary widely in both their size and funding needs. This Fund is meant to provide resources for projects that may not be eligible under other grants.

Eligible REPI Challenge projects include projects that will help make key mission capabilities of strategic importance to DOD more resilient to climate change and severe weather events. In addition to these climate resilience projects, funding is available for projects that promote land conservation or management activities limiting incompatible development or relieving current or anticipated environmental restrictions. Cooperatively administered by the Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the Multistate Conservation Grant Program (MSCGP) funds projects that address regional or national-level priorities of state fish and wildlife agencies. Established by the Wildlife and Sport Fish Restoration Programs Improvement Act in 2000, the program provides up to $6,000,000 in funding each year.

The U.S. Standard Grants Program is a competitive, matching grants program that supports public-private partnerships in the United States that further the goals of the North American Wetlands Conservation Act (NAWCA). Projects must involve long-term protection, restoration, and/or enhancement of wetlands and associated upland habitats for the benefit of fish and wildlife.

Through this funding opportunity, the Trust seeks to engage new applicants and organizations from diverse communities in small-scale projects that enhance communities, engage residents, and, ultimately, improve natural resources. The Trust seeks to engage groups that have traditionally been under-engaged with environmental issues and new applicants from a diverse array of communities. Only applicants who have received three grants or fewer from the Trust in the past are eligible.

Chesapeake Bay Trust Nontidal Wetlands
Awards Program
The Maryland Department of the Environment and the Trust seek proposals for nontidal wetland projects in Maryland. This program seeks to implement cost-effective wetland projects to provide valuable wetland functions, including habitat for a wide range of species and improved water quality, flood attenuation, recharge of groundwater, and aesthetics in the State’s local watersheds and ultimately the Chesapeake Bay, Youghiogheny River, and Atlantic Coastal Bays.

The Delmarva Restoration and Conservation Network (DRCN), formed in 2017, is a collaborative of local, state, and Federal government agencies and NGOs working with private and public landowners and local governments to identify the most important places to protect and restore, and to obtain support and funding for voluntary restoration and conservation.
The DRCN Mission is to restore and conserve Delmarva’s landscapes, waterways, and shorelines that are special to its people, fundamental to its economy, and vital for its native fish, wildlife, and plants.
