Birding for Business

Beth Sheppard, Lower Shore Land Trust

Partnering with the Rural Maryland Council (RMC) and Delmarva Birding Weekends (DBW), the Lower Shore Land Trust (LSLT) took flight on a new community project in 2024. Though the Lower Shore of Maryland is well-known nationally and internationally as a birdwatching destination, the significant economic benefits that birdwatchers contribute to the region’s economy are less well-known.

Through a Maryland Agricultural Education and Rural Development Assistance Fund (MAERDAF) grant, LSLT and DBW aimed to bring light to these benefits by inviting the public to three bird walks led by Jim Rapp (DBW) and Jared Parks, Land Programs Director of LSLT.

In addition to the bird walks, a brochure of regional birding locations was produced and distributed, signage for three preserves was installed, a bird-specific newsletter was created by LSLT, and wildlife and travel writers were engaged to pen articles about birding opportunities on the Lower Shore.

The walks aimed to introduce new or lesser-known birding sites to the public. Locations included MD Department of Natural Resources (DNR) newly acquired Bay Club property near Berlin, MD with a stop at Heron Park, DNR’s Nanticoke Wildlife Management Area (aka Nutter’s Neck) in Wicomico, and Maryland Ornithological Society’s (MOS) Irish Grove Sanctuary in Somerset. Many of the bird walk participants were first-time visitors to the locations and were introduced to tidal marsh, meadow, and forest birds of the region. By highlighting these natural habitats and the critical role they play in the life-cycle of birds, LSLT and DBW showcased the importance of habitat conservation efforts by groups such as LSLT, DNR, and MOS to provide a wide variety of habitat for wildlife and public access opportunities.

In partnership with the private landowners of the historic Wye House property in Easton, Maryland, Eastern Shore Land Conservancy is currently requesting proposals to provide professional engineering, technical and construction services for the Wye House Farm living shoreline project.

November 8, 2024 4—7 PM Eastern Shore Conservation Center, Easton

In celebration of what local writer Tom Horton described as the autumn “chorus of goose music,” a sound as “synonymous with the Eastern Shore as crab feasts and oysters,” ESLC will once again kick off the first day of Waterfowl with Goose Music—a courtyard celebration with live music from artist and ESLC staffer Sam Pugh, local beer from RaR Brewing, and local eats from Four Dogs Brewing Company. This event will be held from 4 to 7 PM in the Eastern Shore Conservation Center (ESCC) courtyard with a cash bar and food. The Waterfowl Festival’s wildlife photography gallery, hosted at the ESCC for the duration of the festival, will also remain open for viewing. Admission is free but online registration is appreciated. This event is rain or shine! In the event of bad weather we will move the party inside the ESCC.

The Delmarva Restoration and Conservation Network (DRCN), formed in 2017, is a collaborative of local, state, and Federal government agencies and NGOs working with private and public landowners and local governments to identify the most important places to protect and restore, and to obtain support and funding for voluntary restoration and conservation.

The DRCN Mission is to restore and conserve Delmarva’s landscapes, waterways, and shorelines that are special to its people, fundamental to its economy, and vital for its native fish, wildlife, and plants.
