Disability Rights Maryland (DRM) recognizes the achievements and contributions of Black people in our country and actively supports initiatives throughout the year that promote greater equity, diversity and inclusion.

2021 Developmental Disability Days (DD Day) at the Legislature

Over 500 Marylanders attended the kick-off event for DD Days, an annual event where advocates work to promote and advance the rights of people with developmental and intellectual disabilities. DRM sponsored and participated in this informative and inspirational week of events along with our partners in the Developmental Disabilities Coalition, The Arc Maryland, Maryland Association of Community Services (MACS), Maryland Developmental Disabilities Council and People on the Go Maryland. Disconnected in Maryland: Statewide Data Show the Racial and Economic Underpinnings of the Digital Divide

A recent study by the Abell Foundation on the 2019 American Community found racial and economic underpinnings to the digital divide across Maryland. Data reveals that 108,000 households with children under the age of 18 do not have internet service. This digital divide disproportionately affects people with low incomes, African-Americans and Hispanics. Click here to read the full Abell Report >>

DRM's Ivis Burris Shares Transit Experiences at Transit Safety & Investment Kickoff Event

Ivis Burris, member of Consumers for Accessible Ride Services (CARS) and DRM Sunshine Folk Advocate, reported on the unreliability of Maryland Transit Administration's (MTA) transit service at the Transit Safety & Investment Act Kickoff Event on Tuesday, Jan. 19th. Her testimony relayed that both she and her son, who attends adult daycare, were repeatedly stranded or forced to deal with vehicles that often break down. These and other failings of the agency's transit program have caused major hardship in the lives of people with disabilities, who need reliable access to transit to get to work, life-saving medical appointments and other critical life activities. DRM supports the Transit Safety & Investment Act to improve transit safety, promote racial equity and increase integration in our communities. DRM’s Education Team Hosts Live Q&A Sessions for Parents

Parents and families can now watch all past and future DRM Facebook Live Q&A Education sessions on DRM's YouTube channel. Launched in August 2020 to answer parents' most pressing questions about distance learning for students with disabilities during the coronavirus pandemic, the popular service by the Education Team has had more than 15,000 views. Click here to watch the Q&A sessions >>
