Construction Update

  • The contractor started the concrete sidewalk on the east side of the road allowance, which included alignment, concrete forming, and pouring.
  • Additional soils, not intended for re-use, were sent off-Site for disposal.
  • Grading was largely completed on the east side of the road allowance, setting adequate depth for paver stones and sidewalk hardscaping.

Next Week

  • Additional concrete work for the sidewalks, crosswalks, and paved areas.
  • Boardwalk construction begins.

Forming

Sidewalks, like other parts of the design, are created by pouring concrete into a form. These forms can be straight, narrow, wide, cylindrical, and even curved but ultimately it's important so the concrete stays where it's poured until it cures enough to stand on its own.

Sidewalks

1st Avenue East is mostly made up of long rows of buildings, each section belonging to a different owner. Over the years, elements like fire escapes, metres, are added and taken away as needed. By adding a consistent sidewalk down the entire length of the Avenue accessibility is greatly enhanced.

Fun Fact:

Grading in construction, typically called site grading, refers to the act of ensuring a level base or getting a specific slope on the land. This is an essential part of site preparation, which needs to be done before construction begins.

When grading the land, the construction team sculpts the surface to get the desired result. Generally, grading is necessary to ensure a level base for the structure. However, it’s also used to produce specific slopes on an area.

The primary objectives of site grading include:

  • Ensure a proper drainage system
  • Get the property’s desired aesthetics
  • Reduce environmental impact by ensuring water runoff and reducing erosion and pollutants
  • Comply with any relevant local rules, restrictions, and regulations

Take a look at a detached home with a yard. These yards (unless very old) generally have sloping ground starting at its highest point against the house and running toward the road or ditch.

Did you know that any modern paved road will have a slight peak in the centre? This is to ensure water and debris run off ends up in the gutter.

Construction area: 1st Avenue East between 9th Street & 10th Street 900 block of 1st Avenue East
