U. S. Army Corps of Engineers Advanced Chemistry Lab, Aberdeen Proving Ground, MD
This project was completed via the Design/Build method with the Baltimore Corps of Engineers. DRS completed the 35% design and assisted the USACE in preparing the Design/Build RFP.  DRS also participated in the selection of the Design/Build Team and monitored the final design and construction process. The state-of-the-art laboratory (84,000 SF) and the administration building (28,000 SF) are dedicated to research work in support of the defensive mission of the United States Army to protect the soldiers against chemical warfare threats.   The facility is our nation’s sole provider of total lifecycle chemical agent research, development, evaluation and agent production expertise. The project team received the USACE’s Member, Project Development Team Award in 2005 and achieved Bronze SPiRiT Certification, which was the Government’s equivalent to LEED, Bronze. Based upon performance, DRS was selected to design a major addition to the Lab Building in 2010.

A growing student body and expanding athletic program led Duquesne University to build their Student Recreation and Multi-purpose Building. The location of the site created a new Campus portal, and a pedestrian bridge, designed by another firm, serves as a main connection point for students accessing the facility from the upper campus.   The first and second levels contain a lively outdoor plaza, two -story Barnes & Noble Bookstore, other restaurants and retail shops and a student fitness center. The third and fourth levels incorporate a basketball court with raised running track, deck hockey/multi-purpose floor, spinning studio, racquetball courts, weight training and locker rooms. The top level is their Collegiate Conference Center providing food service facilities for major campus and conference events with a fantastic view of the City. The project achieved a LEED New Construction Silver Certification.

In the late 1990’s and early 2000’s, the firm underwent leadership changes and was renamed, DRS Architects. Phil Hundley and Greg Madej continued to manage the firm and Kathryn Jolley was made a Principal in 2007. DRS has always approached all design opportunities as a chance to positively impact and shape the world around us. With the implementation of Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED), many of DRS’s staff became LEED accredited professionals and the Firm has completed projects that have received Platinum, Gold, Silver, or Bronze certified.
This year, DRS Architects is celebrating 60 years of design excellence in architecture, planning and interior design.  We want to share the six decades of our history with you and thank our clients for their continued support. Please follow us as we celebrate projects completed throughout each of our six decades in business.
