SUNDAY, OCTOBER 11, 2026

This Sunday, Pastor Ryan will continue our sermon series, John: That You May Believe, preaching from John 2:1-11. Join us as we behold Christ and discover the life found in his name.

Equipping Classes | 8:30 AM

Auditorium: Delighting in the Trinity: Theology of the Trinity

Explore the biblical doctrine of the Trinity and grow in your understanding of who God is—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. This class will help us see how the Trinity is not merely a theological doctrine, but a beautiful truth that shapes our worship, prayer, and relationship with God.

Equipping Hall 1: Promised Land to Exile: A Survey of Joshua through Chronicles

Trace Israel’s story from the conquest of the Promised Land through the period of exile and beyond. This survey will highlight key events, people, and themes in Joshua through Chronicles, helping us see God’s faithfulness to his people and his unfolding plan of redemption throughout the Old Testament.

Preschool Ministry | 10:00 AM

Preschool Ministry (for children from birth to 5 years old) will be available during the service.

NEW NEEDS, NEW STAFF TRANSITIONS

Over the coming months, several staff transitions will help us address ministry needs and invest in the future of DSC. After considerable prayer and discussion, the elders are grateful to share a plan involving four areas of ministry and four people whose gifts and faithfulness we have already seen.

These changes are connected: giving one person greater focus creates responsibilities for someone else to assume. Together, they reflect our desire to develop leaders, care for our congregation, and send workers to serve beyond DSC.

Leadership Development: Alex Schroeder

At our February elders retreat, we recognized the need to give more attention to identifying, training, and developing leaders within our church. We already do some of this, but as our church grows and prepares to plant another church, we need to invest more deliberately in future elders, ministry leaders, church planters, and missionaries.

We believe Alex is particularly well suited to lead this work. He will continue as Discipleship Pastor, overseeing Community Groups, men’s and women’s ministries, Equipping Classes, and other discipleship areas, but we will transfer several administrative responsibilities to give him more time for leadership development.

Over the past four years, Alex has carried substantial ministry and administrative responsibilities with faithfulness and skill. He has built out our Equipping Hour and led leadership training initiatives (many behind the scenes) that have borne significant fruit. We are grateful for his work and excited to give him more time for work in which he has demonstrated particular gifts.

Pastoral Assistant: Ben Hobbs

Beginning January 1, Ben will transition from Youth Minister to Pastoral Assistant. This restores a staff position we’ve had in the past, and it meets several connected needs.

Ben will assist Alex, Drew, and Ryan and assume administrative responsibilities for outward-facing ministries, such as the Clarus Conference, our Gospel Coalition regional chapter, and the Simeon Trust Preaching Workshop for area pastors. This will help free Alex for greater investment in leadership development.

Ben will also become one of our primary preachers alongside Alex. As Chase prepares to leave next spring to plant Resurrection Church, we need someone to help cover the sermons he would ordinarily preach. Ben’s preaching gifts have become increasingly evident, not least through his Sunday sermons.

This role will also give Ben broader pastoral experience and opportunities to develop as a preacher and leader. Lord willing, it could help prepare him to serve as a preaching pastor in the future.

For four years, Ben has loved, taught, and discipled our students and invested in their families. He has done a terrific job. This transition reflects our gratitude for his faithfulness and our desire to continue developing the gifts we have seen in him.

Youth and Young Adults: Tate Madzima

With Ben’s transition, Tate will become Youth Pastor while also providing pastoral oversight for our young adult ministry.

Tate has faithfully led and shaped children’s ministry for five years. Through countless Sundays, he has equipped volunteers, cared for children, supported families, and discipled parents. Our children’s ministry is stronger because of his leadership, and we are deeply grateful for his work.

This is also a fitting season for Tate to move into youth ministry. His own children are beginning to enter the youth-group years, and his interests and gifts have increasingly drawn him toward ministry with students.

Tate will continue providing pastoral and elder oversight for children’s ministry while transferring its weekly administration, organization, and logistics to …

Children’s Ministry: Cara Pilgreen

Cara Pilgreen will become our part-time Director of Children’s Ministry, taking responsibility for its day-to-day leadership and administration.

Cara has faithfully served alongside Tate as Administrative Assistant. She knows the in-and-outs of our families, volunteers, and ministry systems, and has demonstrated sustained care for the children and families she serves. This transition recognizes her gifts and entrusts her with greater responsibility. We are excited to see her lead with Tate’s continued pastoral oversight. We also know she’ll work well with our Deacon of special events childcare, Scott Pilgreen!

Reasons for Prayer and Gratitude

These changes will require adjustment, and we recognize that some members will feel them more deeply than others. Please pray for Alex, Ben, Tate, Cara, and the ministries they will help lead. Please extend patience as they settle into their responsibilities, and cheer them on!

There is much to celebrate here. Every one of these transitions involves someone who already knows our church, shares our convictions and culture, and has already served DSC so well.

As we prepare to send Chase, Sandy, Dan, and dozens of DSC members to plant Resurrection Church, new needs arise here. These are needs we welcome: we want to develop leaders, send workers, and raise up more behind them.

God has kindly provided faithful people among us, and we are grateful.

With great affection for you all,

– Pastor Ryan (on behalf of the elders)

BALLOON FIESTA OUTREACH

MOVED TO SUNDAY MORNING!

Thank you to everyone who joined us last Sunday for our Balloon Fiesta Outreach! It was a fantastic success with both our volunteers and our community, so we’re making a quick schedule change: this week’s planned Saturday outreach is moving to Sunday, October 11, from 7:00 to 8:30 AM.

It was wonderful seeing community members use our parking lot and clean restrooms, while our members greeted them at the door. Showing hospitality to early-morning balloon watchers right before our Sunday service created a unique way to minister to our neighbors—and it gave them a glimpse of the vibrant life here at DSC!

This outreach is a lot of fun, so if you haven't signed up yet, please consider joining us this Sunday morning. We hope to see you there!

SURVIVING THE HOLIDAYS

SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 7, 2026

The holidays can be a particularly difficult season when you are grieving the loss of someone you love. While the world around you may be celebrating, grief can make the holidays feel heavy, lonely, or uncertain.

Surviving the Holidays is a caring and encouraging gathering designed to help you navigate this season of grief. Through hope, practical guidance, and the support of others who understand, you’ll be reminded that you don’t have to walk through the holidays alone.

Join us on Saturday, November 7, from 2:00–4:00 PM at Desert Springs Church. The cost of the workbook is $12 plus shipping, payable when you register. You can register at griefshare.org or on our website or app.

If you know someone who is grieving, we encourage you to invite them to join us—and consider coming with them. This gathering is also a wonderful introduction to GriefShare for those who may be interested in participating in the group beginning in January, 2027.

NAVAJO FIREWOOD MINISTRY – JOIN US!

SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 7, 2026

Our next Navajo Firewood Ministry workday is scheduled for Saturday, November 7, 2026. We’ll begin loading at 8:00 AM at the Woodyard (5800 Signal Ave. NE).

This ministry is focused on serving Navajo communities where many families rely on firewood as a primary source of heat and cooking fuel. Together, we help meet a real and urgent need by delivering firewood to Navajo churches, mission schools, and trusted individuals who distribute it to those facing difficult winter conditions.

If this is your first time joining us, we’ll start by loading trucks and trailers at the Woodyard, then travel to one of several locations to deliver the wood directly into these communities.

More than just meeting physical needs, this is an opportunity to come alongside the Navajo people with care, respect, and compassion—sharing God’s provision in a tangible way while building relationships and encouraging gospel-centered connection.

We’d love for you to be part of this important work.

THE MEMBERSHIP CLASS IS FOR MEMBERS TOO

One of my great joys in serving on staff and as a pastor is getting to teach our membership class. Helping new people discern whether to make Desert Springs their church home, and rehearsing our core distinctives and doctrinal emphases is a real privilege.

But the membership class isn’t only beneficial for prospective members. It’s for members too.

Current members make the class better. They offer a welcoming, familiar face for those who are new. They get to know prospective members, and prospective members get to know them. And current members often find they benefit too.

It’s a chance to reconsider and rehearse what we believe about membership, discipline, the ordinances, polity, all that fun stuff that shapes our life together.

That’s why I encourage every member of Desert Springs to think of 8:30 on Sunday morning as dedicated time to be in the building. Join an equipping class or occasionally go through the membership class again.

Our next class begins November 1, and runs for five weeks.

If you’re wondering whether you should attend the class as a member, ask yourself: have you wondered what makes Desert Springs distinct? Would a clearer grasp of our core convictions deepen your growth, obedience, and love for Christ and his church?

If so, the membership class might be for you. Even if you’re already a member.
