MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

October 30, 2023

Back in 1983, the State Chamber moved in to maybe the first condominium office building in Wilmington. As the story goes, then DuPont Company CEO Chuck Welch was instrumental in making the land available that today’s One Commerce Center sits on at 1201 N. Orange Street. This 11-story brick and glass building still looks great from the outside, and the timeless design by Tevebaugh Architecture is a compliment to the neighborhood. Many of the internal offices have undergone partial or complete renovations over the years, and now after 40 years, it’s our turn as our second floor space demolition work is underway.

Over the years, the State Chamber office has been a part of history. The Chamber has seen numerous leaders and employees go on to have terrific careers—both within our walls and with organizations throughout the state. This State Chamber has survived 187 years because we continuously react and adapt to the changing landscape around us and the ever-evolving needs of the business community.

However, the physical space—which included a reception area, kitchen, offices, and a conference room—never really changed. It's now time for our workspace to be modernized so that it better suits the needs of our employees and our members. We look forward to reopening our doors and inviting you in to our new, brightly remodeled office in 2024!

News You Can Use

It was in graduate school at Georgetown University that I first heard the Latin term, “tempus fugit” which translates to “time flies.” But that seems appropriate as we get set to leave October and start November this week! Economic news kicks off tomorrow with consumer confidence numbers for October and August results from the Case-Shiller home price index. On Wednesday, we get our first look at ADP employment data for October, as well as job openings and construction spending from September. Thursday brings us September factory order data, as well as third-quarter U.S. productivity results. We wrap up the week on Friday with U.S. unemployment figures for October.

After a couple of quiet weeks for earnings calls, things really pick up this week. McDonalds, FMC Corp., Public Storage, and ZoomInfo Technologies kick things off today, while Incyte, Insperity, Meritage Homes, Neurocrine Biosciences, Pfizer, and others are scheduled for Tuesday. DuPont leads off the Wednesday calls and is joined by Avis Budget, Bally’s, Boston Properties, CVS Health, PayPal, Zillow, and almost two dozen others. Apple, DraftKings, Exelon, Moderna, NRG Energy, Starbucks, and many others round out a very busy week.
