Denmark & Switzerland, the Inflation and Central Bank Policies

Join us for an exciting evening with Signe Krogstrup, Governor, National Bank of Denmark.

After a series of disturbances to the global economy in the shape of the pandemic and Russia’s war in Ukraine, inflation has soared to levels not seen since the 1980 in many advanced economies. But there are important differences across countries, with Swiss inflation remaining relatively low compared to other advanced economies.

Signe Krogstrup will discuss recent global economic and political developments in a broader historical context, and zoom in on current high inflation levels and central bank policies in this current juncture, with a focus on Denmark and Switzerland. She will offer her views on where inflation and economic activity are heading in the coming years and appropriate macroeconomic policies to address these developments.

Finally, she will explain the key differences between Swiss and Danish monetary policy tools and targets, and their different roles in broader economic policy mix of their respective countries, comparing also with the Federal Reserve and the ECB.

About the speaker: Signe Krogstrup
Krogstrup is an expert on currency issues. At the turn of the millennium she studied at the renowned "Graduate Institute" in Geneva. "Economic theory was not an end in itself there, but an instrument for making the best policy for society," says Krogstrup. At that time she was inspired by Charles Wyplosz; Today he is a professor emeritus and a founding member of the "SNB Observatory", which is critical of the SNB.

After completing her doctorate and teaching at the Graduate Institute for several years, Krogstrup moved to the Swiss National Bank in 2007. There she became a speechwriter for the later SNB President Philipp Hildebrand. "At the beginning I had no idea how to write speeches," says Krogstrup and laughs. But she learned quickly: as early as 2011 she became Vice Director in the Monetary Policy Analysis department. In this role she was involved in the introduction of the Swiss minimum exchange rate - "indirectly", as she says today.
