MAY HEALTH AND WELLNESS OBSERVANCES
May provides several opportunities to promote health and wellness awareness. Here are several resources to help community leaders and healthcare providers start planning ways to communicate, educate and involve the community they serve.
ASTHMA AWARENESS MONTH
May gives the
Asthma Coalition of Long Island (ACLI) the opportunity to renew their dedication to improving health outcomes and quality of life for the 26 million Americans living with asthma, including 7.1 million children. More than 75,000 of those children live on Long Island. ACLI can help you plan your own
Asthma Awareness Month event by providing educational materials, teaching tools, bubbles, crayons, coloring books and "Trigger Bingo."

to request an event kit. Download a copy of the
Asthma Awareness Month Event Planning Guide from the Environmental Protection Agency

.
In recognition of World Asthma Day, May 1, 2018, Stony Brook Medicine will be hosting an educational event. Join asthma experts from adults and pediatric pulmonology to hear about the latest strategies in asthma care.
May 1, 2018, 11 am - 2 pm, Stony Brook University Hospital cafeteria.
MENTAL HEALTH MONTH
Each year millions of Americans face the reality of living with a mental illness. During May, National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) raises the awareness of mental health. NAMI fights stigma, provides support, educates the public and advocates for policies that support people with mental illness and their families. In 2018, NAMI will promote the theme of "CureStigma" throughout all awareness events, including Mental Health Month. Visit NAMI's
website for more information.
To make your outreach during May easier, the National Council for Behavioral Health developed materials to promote Mental Health Month. Click here for infographics and other resources to use on social media, on your blog, in your local paper and newsletter or in your organization.
The third week in May (May 13-19, 2018) is
National Prevention Week, an annual health observance sponsored by Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) dedicated to increasing public awareness of, and action around, mental and/or substance use disorders.
National Prevention Week is timed to allow schools to raise awareness among students before the school year ends. To l
