JOIN SCC FOR CULTURAL COMPETENCY AND HEALTH LITERACY MASTER TRAINING

The communities we serve are growing in cultural and linguistic diversity. There is a need to inspire cultural change within organizations.

On Tuesday, July 30, 2019, 9:00 am to 4:00 pm, SCC will be holding Cultural Competency and Health Literacy (CCHL) Master Training, an interactive program in which participants will have hands-on learning experience to build better communities.

Post-training, Master Trainers will receive a certificate of completion and will be able to provide training sessions. Master Trainers will be able to facilitate two different trainings: (1) 2 hour CCHL training sessions for workforce professionals and (2) 7.5 hour master training sessions for future master-trainers.

Participants must apply by end of business Friday, July 26, 2019. Please note, completing the application does not confirm attendance to this program. Upon completing the application, you will receive follow up from a CCHL lead with next steps.   For more information on the CCHL program click here.

SBIRT TRAINING AT SUFFOLK COUNTY COMMUNITY COLLEGE

Suffolk County Community College's Chemical Dependency Counselor Training Program is providing Screening Brief Intervention Referral to Treatment (SBRIT) training on the Brentwood Campus, Friday, July 26, 2019, 9:00 am to 1:00 pm.  

Training is for anyone working in the Health and Human Services Delivery System.  Upon successful completion, participants will receive a Certificate from NYS Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services, and will count as four CASAC hours.  

JUNE IS POST-TRAUMATIC STRESS DISORDER AWARENESS MONTH
Even though  Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) treatments work, most people who have PTSD don't get the help they need.  June is PTSD Awareness Month and is established to raise awareness about the many different treatment options.

Help spread the word that effective PTSD treatments are available.  T he U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs website is a useful resource for PTSD.  Here you can find treatment basics, recommended treatments and a Complete guide to Understanding PTSD and PTSD Treatment.

The U.S. is experiencing an alarming rise in suicide - 30 percent in the past two decades. To provide quality crisis and suicide prevention services, there needs to be a sustainable funding stream.  Learn how three National Suicide Prevention Lifeline members have identified alternative funding sources for their crisis call centers by joining National Council for Behavioral Health on Tuesday, June 25, 2019, from 2:00 to 3:30 pm for the webinar, Alternative Funding Strategies to Sustain and Expand Crisis Call Center Operations.

GUIDE TO LONG-ACTING MEDICATIONS
For Providers and Organizations

The National Council's Guide to Long-Acting Medications (LAMs) is a Call to Action for psychiatrists, other clinicians and behavioral health organizations to increase the safe and appropriate use of LAMs.  Providers and organizations can obtain a free copy of the guide, and utilize it to better support people with mental illness.  

NATIONAL HIV TESTING DAY  
June 27, 2019

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC) campaign theme, Doing It My Way, is a call to action that encourages people to get tested for HIV in a way that is comfortable for them.  

This year's National HIV Testing Day is June 27, 2019, and is an annual observance that encourages people to get tested for HIV, know their status and get into treatment right away if they have HIV.  Visit the CDC website to access resources to share messages related to HIV testing and prevention, link patients to care, address stigma and discrimination and more.

BETTER CHOICES, BETTER HEALTH ® WORKSHOP SERIES
Free 6 week health education program for people with chronic illness.  Ongoing registration and information on various programs offered throughout Suffolk, can be found on the SCC Community Bulletin Board here.  

DIABETES PREVENTION PROGRAM
Free to Suffolk County Residents at-risk for developing type-2 Diabetes.  Offered by Suffolk County Department of Health Services, this program is led by a trained lifestyle coach.  Visit  Suffolk County's website  or contact  Deborah at 631-853-2928 for more information and program schedule.

NYS DOH ANNOUNCEMENTS

LONG TERM CARE PLANNING PROJECT MEETING ANNOUNCEMENT 
The NYS DOH and the State Office for the Aging will be holding the third meeting of the Long Term Care Planning Project (LTCPP), an initiative designed to understand the projected needs of older adults in NY by examining the State's aging and long term care system.  

This meeting will be held on July 9, 2019, in Meeting Room 6, on the Concourse of the Empire State Plaza in Albany from 1:00 - 4:00 pm.  The meeting topic will be Family Caregiver Support.  At this meeting, participants can expect to hear from speakers on family caregiver support and then be assigned into groups to discuss how NYS can further support family caregivers.
