November is the beginning of the holiday season, a time when families often gather together and enjoy traditional holiday foods. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) provides a list of five healthy eating tips to help those with diabetes stick to their diabetes meal plan.

CAREGIVERS RETREAT
In Recognition of National Family Caregivers Month

On Tuesday, November 20, 2018, Peconic Bay Medical Center is sponsoring a Caregivers Retreat from 9:00 am to 12:30 pm to give caregivers a chance to relax and rejuvenate.

HEALING CONNECTIONS PEER SUPPORT GROUPS
On-line Support Group Meetings

Healing Connections Peer Support Groups are:
  • For and by people who experience emotional distress, extreme and/or altered states of consciousness, labels of psychiatric diagnosis and/or who are trauma survivors 
  • A space to connect, share and support 
Facilitated by people who are trained peer specialists who also experience emotional distress to guide the support group and offer mutual support.

Groups meet on-line Saturdays and Sundays, 6:30 - 7:30 pm.

MALL WALKING CLUB  

Co-sponsored by Stony Brook University Hospital at the Smith Haven Mall, the Mall Walkers Club meets eight times a year at the Food Court in the Smith Haven Mall.  Members receive a complimentary snack and blood pressure screening starting at 8 a.m., and hear an informative lecture at 9 a.m. The Mall Walkers Club meets the last Wednesday of the month.

A walking program can help:
  • Reduce risk of coronary heart disease
  • Improve blood pressure and blood sugar levels
  • Improve blood lipid profile
  • Maintain body weight and lower risk of obesity
  • Enhance mental well-being

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) Center for Mental Health Services is offering up to $95,000 to support the 2019 Statewide Consumer Network Program, with the goal of improving efforts to address the needs of adults with serious mental illness by developing and/or expanding peer support services, peer leadership and peer engagement strategies statewide. SAMHSA is also offering up to $14,130,226 in grants to support the Healthy Transitions: Improving Life Trajectories for Youth and Young Adults With Serious Mental Disorders Program with the goal of improving access to treatment and support services for youth and young adults, ages 16-25, who have a serious emotional disturbance or a serious mental illness.  Learn more and apply by December 21, 2018.

The NYS Department of Health (NYS DOH) announced the availability of funding to  implement the Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP).  CSFP works to improve the health of  low-income residents 60 years of age and older by supplementing their diets with nutritious foods  provided by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). 

The DOH is seeking  applications from agencies to determine eligibility of applicants, manage participant caseload, receive and store USDA commodities, distribute supplemental foods and provide nutrition education and health care referrals to eligible participants.

COMPASS UNITY'S 2017/2018 OVERVIEW
COMPASS Unity is Bellport/South Country School District's drug and alcohol prevention coalition since 2009.  Their mission is to help keep the youth of the South Country schools and community safe and drug and alcohol free. 
  
It has been a productive year for COMPASS Unity, in which the Coalition continues to make progress within the South Country School District and community.  With continued support by Family Service League's Underage Drinking Prevention initiative, funded by Suffolk Care Collaborative, the Coalition has been responsible for multiple events and activities that have taken place within the Bellport/South Country School District and community.  Click here to read COMPASS Unity's Seasonal Newsletter, DIRECTIONS, which highlights the year's activities.


The newsletter also includes COMPASS Unity's announcement of the recently awarded Drug-Free Communities (DFC) Support Program grant.  The DFC is the nation's leading effort to mobilize communities to prevent substance use among youth aged 12-17.  COMPASS Unity is one of 731 nationwide Drug-Free Communities Program awardees for fiscal year 2018.

MANAGED LONG TERM CARE CLINICAL ADVISORY GROUP WEBINAR SLIDES
On September 20, 2018, the NYS Department of Health held a webinar entitled, Managed Long Term Care (MLTC) Value Based Payment Clinical Advisory Group (CAG).  The purpose of the meeting was to provide the final Measurement Year 2019 set and to inform the CAG about the policy for Skilled Nursing Facilities.  The webinar slides are now available to view on the VBP Resource Library.  Questions can be sent to MLTCVBP@health.ny.gov.
