What have you been doing since you graduated from DSU?
After living in Cleveland for 10 years, I made a significant career move in 2010, venturing into a job opportunity in my hometown of Istanbul, Turkey. Initially uncertain about this decision, my life took a lovely turn when I met my husband, Korhan Guler, during a scuba diving trip. Already in love with water since the age of 9, my passion deepened as my husband owned a well-known scuba diving company, leading us to embark on numerous diving adventures.
While in Turkey, I spent several years at Samsung Electronics before embracing a new adventure—motherhood. Following the birth of my son Ege, named after the Aegean Sea, where we shared many scuba diving adventures, I embarked on an international career path. This journey led me to work for a Spanish university, UCAM, before ultimately settling in Canada in 2022.
Presently, I am permanent resident in Canada, ON and am employed at the University of Waterloo, within the Faculty of Health Graduate Studies, focusing on Marketing and Recruitment. My journey continues to be fueled by a passion for education, exploration, and making meaningful connections.
How did DSU prepare you for what you're doing now?
I came to Delta State University as an international student at a very early age and the experience I had there made me the person I am today. [Athletic Director Emeritus] Ronnie Mayer's rigorous swimming practices and Dr. Cooper Johnson's insightful management classes imparted invaluable lessons that continue to shape my professional life. The skills I acquired at DSU remain integral to my work, consistently positioning me as the preferred candidate throughout my career. Being a DSU graduate is a source of great pride for me, a testament to the quality education and experiences that have propelled me to success in various roles across 4 different countries.
What’s a favorite DSU memory?
There are so many unforgettable moments from my time at DSU. From the exhilarating swim meets to the endless conversations at the cafeteria's swimmer table, each memory holds a special place in my heart. Despite my family being distant and unable to attend my swimming meets, the unwavering support from my best friend’s family left an indelible mark, creating cherished memories.
Also, I'll never forget the day Coach Ronnie warmly welcomed me at the airport, with his daughter Ann Marie chatting throughout the whole journey back, even though I couldn't quite follow her conversation because of not being an expert in southern accent by that time. 😊
Advice to Delta State's international students
I encourage students to embrace social connections, participate in activities, volunteer, and extend a helping hand to others, recognizing that there's always someone who can benefit from your support. Cultivating meaningful relationships can deeply enrich our lives, and Delta State provides an excellent environment to turn this aspiration into reality.
