PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE:

To our very dear Members and Friends,

Ready, set, WAIT!

Diablo Valley Literacy Council conducted two days of Tutor Training on March 7 and 14. We matched each new tutor with a potential student and asked them to contact their student, and then...

We all know that in the middle of March we were instructed to shelter in place and practice social distancing. Accordingly, we have advised all of our tutors to discontinue face-to-face meetings with their students.

If you can still maintain communication with your student(s) that would be ideal. Some ways might be email, telephone, texting, or conferencing online. Theresa Nidetz, who attended the training, reports that she has used Zoom for face time with her student and it worked well. I converse regularly with one of my students on the telephone, and that is useful because we are honing her pronunciation and it is easy to zero in on the words I don't understand over the phone. Be creative if that suits you but, know that it is also okay if you and your student decide to take a break during these uncertain times.

We welcome Terese McGregor to our Board of Directors. Terese has experience in fund raising, keeping a balanced budget, and is also interested in boosting our tutor recruiting efforts. Her talents and interests provide a good balance within our Board and she contributes well to our meetings. Stay tuned for some innovations in the future! (holiday boutique anyone?)

ANNUAL MEETING IN JANUARY

The January membership meeting was stimulating on many counts with good questions raised and good discussions.

The directors who were up for a new 3-year term as well as our two new board members, Marcia Haas (formerly Ujcic) and Jin Qinghua, were unanimously elected by acclamation.

The slide presentation included a diversity chart showing the countries represented by ESL students being tutored as of 12/31/2019.

The question and answer period raised discussion on topics such as raising dues to balance the budget, reducing allowable reimbursement for attending ProLiteracy Conference, adding a fund-raising function.

Buffet lunch was served, and Sheila Driscoll won the drawing for a $100 Southwest Airlines coupon!
Have you paid your 2020 DVLC membership dues?
Annual dues are $15 and most of you have sent them in. If not, please take a moment to submit payment today.
