Summer 2019
Vol. 33  No. 2
Dear Members and Friends,
I am going to start my message this summer with a paean to the Treasurers who have served Diablo Valley Literacy Council so ably. Ed Chambers has offered his time to the organization in many ways, including helping to create the by-laws (twice!), training at workshops, producing name tags and certificates for new tutors, and being Santa Claus for the children at holiday events. His greatest contribution, though, was as our diligent treasurer for 16 years. (!!) We were extremely lucky to enlist Joanne Hill to succeed Ed in March of 2016. For three years Joanne has kept a steady hand on our finances and kept us from making any missteps, keeping her eye on prudent operations. This summer, though, Joanne is moving away and we must find a new treasurer. Our deep and sincere thanks to Ed Chambers and Joanne Hill whose efforts have been a godsend for DVLC.
I have finally come to realize that Treasurer is the most important office to an organization such as ours. We can limp along without a President, Vice President, or Secretary, but without a Treasurer to make deposits, write checks, report to the state, we CANNOT OPERATE! We are looking for an experienced bookkeeper to step up and help the Literacy Council to continue operations. If you have the right qualifications PLEASE consider filling that important position
for us.
I hope to see many of you at our Ice Cream Social on Saturday, August 3 from 1:00 to 3:00 pm! (details below) Our next Tutor Training Workshop is scheduled for October 5 and 12. Four people have already signed up. We are hoping that in the next three months we will receive many more enrollments AND find a treasurer to succeed Joanne.

Shining Stars!
Sheila Driscoll, Pamela Newacheck, and Pat Pomidor all put in more than 20 hours of tutoring during the January through March timeframe. Several tutors noted that their tutees are attending ESL classes as well as the tutoring sessions. That's a great combination for those learners who are able to fit both into their schedules.

ProLiteracy Conference Sept 25-28!
ProLiteracy puts together an inspiring conference every two years. Learn More! Attendees will gain perspective on new technologies, innovative instructional tools and strategies, and leadership skills to take back to their programs.
Diablo Valley Literacy Council can foot the bill for two attendees at the ProLiteracy Conference this fall (registration, flight, hotel).
