Why the UN General Assembly still matters **

More than eight decades on from its founding, the UN General Assembly remains the place where the UN’s 193 Member States come together to debate the defining challenges of the day, from war and peace – to development, climate change and human rights.

Richard Gowan, Director of UN and Multilateral Diplomacy at the International Crisis Group in New York, has spent years studying the organization – its highs and lows.
Ahead of the General Assembly’s high-level week, he sat down with UN News to discuss why the Assembly remains a vital stage for international diplomacy – and why, despite a changing world rife with division, its role still matters.
UN News: Take us back to 1945, when the UN was created in the aftermath of the Second World War. What did its founders hope the General Assembly would become?
Richard Gowan: I think the founders of the UN assumed that the Security Council would be the centre of most decision making in 1945. But after the UN started working, the big powers in the Security Council became divided very quickly, and suddenly a lot of political discussions moved to the General Assembly.
If you go back to the 1940s and early 1950s, it was the General Assembly that was really driving a lot of decisions around the Palestinian question, around Korea, rather than the Security Council, which was very frequently paralyzed by Cold War tensions.
UN News: As developing countries became more organized and influential in the General Assembly, how did they reshape the issues that the UN focused on?
Richard Gowan: Developing countries wanted to use the General Assembly as a space to talk about apartheid in South Africa, to talk some other late colonial crises, like the persistence of the Portuguese Empire in Africa; to talk about Palestine, which became more of a focus in the 1970s.
But developing countries also wanted to talk about what they saw as a very unfair global economic order. And in 1974, the General Assembly passed a resolution calling for a new economic order that would be fairer to the developing world. And that started some very tough diplomacy, that ran through the 1970s and the 1980s about the unfairness of the global economic system.
UN News: Do you feel like they changed global politics beyond the UN?
Richard Gowan: The General Assembly during the Cold War was the primary platform for countries emerging from colonialism to assert themselves on the world stage, and I do think that the campaign against apartheid in the General Assembly did have a huge impact and did contribute to the eventual collapse of apartheid at the start of the 1990s.
I think without the assembly, the vast majority of UN Member States wouldn't have had a voice on many global affairs. We didn't get a new international economic order that would be fairer to the global south, but without the assembly, many countries would not really have had global voice at all. READ MORE

China's Vice President, Han Zheng, urged the world to defend the postwar international order on Saturday, telling the UN General Assembly that geopolitical conflicts, widening development gaps and mounting global challenges make multilateralism more urgent than ever
“The world wants peace not war,” Mr. Han told the General Debate of the Assembly's 81st session.
He said the international system centered on the UN and the international order, underpinned by international law that emerged after World War Two “must be upheld,” calling for disputes to be settled through dialogue rather than “unilateral military actions that violate the UN Charter and circumvent Security Council authorization.”

Russia's Foreign Minister, Sergey Lavrov, accused Western countries of destabilising the world through “force and double standards” in his address to the UN General Assembly on Saturday, vowing that Moscow's “special military operation” in Ukraine would be “carried through to the end.”
On Gaza, Mr. Lavrov said the Security Council-endorsed 20-point US peace plan had not delivered peace, with older people, women and children still being killed while the humanitarian situation remains “critical.”
Turning to the West Bank, he warned, “If this continues, it will become impossible to establish a Palestinian state. There will simply be no land left for it.”
He called for urgent and “unconventional” international action on Palestine as well as Lebanon, Syria, Yemen, Iraq, Sudan, Somalia and South Sudan - and repeated Russia's call to lift the tightened US blockade of Cuba.
Mr. Lavrov accused European governments of arming Ukraine and helping it strike civilians, saying they were working to obstruct peace talks that “many are interested” in, including the Trump administration in Washington.
Marking 80 years since the Nuremberg trials concluded following the defeat of Nazi Germany, he said the lessons had not been learned by all, accusing European Union governments of tolerating what he called “Ukrainian Nazism” while restricting the Russian language.
Iran President Masoud Pezeshkian opened his General Assembly address with a direct rebuttal to US President Donald Trump, who a day earlier had branded Iran the “number one sponsor of terror.”
From the Assembly podium, he held up a picture of former supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who he said was “assassinated without any legal framework or reason” in a joint US-Israeli strike last February.
He then showed images of children he suggested had been killed in US-Israeli attacks on a school and a sports hall, alongside photographs of their graves.
“They were innocent. They had committed no crimes,” he stressed.
The Iranian leader declared: “We have been the victims of terrorism.”
For the past two centuries, Iran had not attacked another country or territory, he said, rejecting accusations that it was a source of regional instability.
“We did not bend the knee; we did not bow our heads. We responded, but we did not hit civilian populations,” he said
President Pezeshkian reiterated that Iran is developing nuclear technology for peaceful purposes, not for weapons: “For our sick people it is cure and treatment, for the agricultural sector it is food security, for industries it is advancement and progress.”
At the same time, he strongly condemned a “double standard” on the issue of nuclear development, stating that Israel, which is not a member of the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), has weapons of mass destruction yet has never been inspected.
“The nuclear weapon is in Israel, but the inspectors are in Iran. Israel kills, but Iran is subject to sanctions,” he stressed.
The Iranian President emphasized his support for the Palestinian people, saying that 80,000 innocent civilians in Gaza have been “brutally murdered,” and hundreds of thousands have been displaced.
“They (Israel) are committing genocide...then they label others as terrorists,” he said, referring to Israel.
“Those who have committed terrorism, are they the protectors of peace and stability? They have adhered to none of the international laws,” he highlighted, extending his approach of turning the tables

Just because a lie is repeated a thousand times doesn’t make it true; President Trump called Cuba “an absolute failed state” from the UN podium.
When he uttered those words, the Cuban diplomats stood up and walked out of the hall. There was no need to refute him; the action itself was the most eloquent response.
It was not a diplomatic discourtesy, but rather the basic dignity of a sovereign country in the face of slander.

Venezuela’s Bolivarian Revolution and Nicaragua’s Sandinista Revolution strive for socialism, making them targets for regime change. Both have been subjected to coup attempts, diplomatic isolation, and punishing sanctions. The pressure has been more intense on Caracas, but Rubio promises more for Managua. Meanwhile, for the explicitly capitalist Mexico, despite constant threats of military intervention on the pretext of combating drugs cartels, regime change need not be Washington’s endgame.
The Guardian’s profile of Venezuela’s Acting President Delcy Rodríguez acknowledges that she is a “pragmatic, witty and intelligent workaholic” who worked her way up the ranks. But the take-home message of the hatchet-job by author Tom Phillips is that she is a “belligerent, power-hungry chameleon…responsible for Venezuela’s slide into poverty and dictatorship.”
He reminds us that Rodríguez is “unelected,” conveniently omitting the fact that after Venezuela’s elected president was illegally abducted by the US, she was vice president and constitutionally sworn in as acting head of state. Jorge Rodríguez, her brother, is reported to have “established himself” as head of the National Assembly, obscuring the fact that he was elected.
The center-right WSJ’s description of the once “hardline socialist” is less harsh, because it portrays her as having moderated her former leftism. However, historian Steve Ellner argues that Rodríguez has not betrayed the revolution but has adopted Deng Xiaoping’s dictum: “hide your strength, bide your time.” Venezuelan writer José Amesty Rivera argues that if she had followed any other course of action, the outcome could have been widespread civil breakdown, leaving the country ungovernable.
Media profiles of Nicaraguan Co-President Rosario Murillo are strikingly personalized and frequently hostile. They overwhelmingly emphasize her personal power but pay little attention to her political ideas, her social constituency, or how her supporters understand her role.
Nicaragua is unique in having a “co-presidency,” created via a constitutional reform in February 2025, which threw a new spotlight on Rosario Murillo, Daniel Ortega’s wife. For the Miami Herald, she is Ortega’s “partner in crime,” for the BBC his “extravagant wife” and for The New York Times and LA Times “the real power behind his presidency.”
The media’s “power behind the throne” narrative undervalues Murillo’s dynamic role in government as effectively the country’s prime minister, overseeing its ministries and ensuring that they meet targets and respond quickly to crises. Not only has this secured real social advances in Nicaragua – the country has had the region’s fastest growth in GDP over the past decade, has the largest hospital network, the best roads, and free education through university level – but also enabled the government to respond effectively to emergencies, such as two violent hurricanes.
Mexico’s Claudia Sheinbaum offers a brief counterexample to the other two profiled leaders. All three women come from the left, but the US relationship with Mexico differs from its relationships with Venezuela and Nicaragua, if still part of its explicit posture of dominating its hemispheric neighbors.
Sheinbaum is hardly less powerful, but unlike Rodríguez and Murillo, she does not represent an explicitly socialist political project. Consequently, the recurring media narrative surrounding her is one of pragmatism, diplomatic skill, and independence rather than the personal ambition, eccentricity, and authoritarianism that dominate profiles of the other two women. New polling finds that Americans approve of socialism more than ever, surpassing the 40 percent threshold for the first time in a Gallup survey as left-wing ideas and politicians surge in popularity.
According to Gallup polling conducted last month, 43 percent of Americans say they have a positive view of socialism. In Gallup’s 16 years of polling this question, the proportion of Americans saying as such has never before surpassed 40 percent. This is a four-point increase from 2025, when 39 percent said they had a positive view of the ideology — a slight increase from 36 percent in 2010.
Socialism is most popular among young people, with 57 percent of those aged 18 to 34 saying they view it positively.
The surge in popularity comes even as the Trump administration is waging a fierce campaign to suppress left-wing groups and progressive ideology through its National Security Presidential Memorandum-7 (NSPM-7) initiative, which broadly equates principles like “anti-Americanism” and “anti-capitalism” with “criminal” speech.
But the capitalist principles that have long dominated the U.S. political system are also dropping in popularity, Gallup found.
According to the latest poll, only 35 percent of Americans have a positive view of big business, down from a high of 58 percent in 2012. Those who favor “free enterprise,” or the idea that businesses should operate relatively free from government regulation, have dropped from a proportion of nearly 90 percent to 77 percent in this year’s polling. Page Six Hollywood recently declared: “War of Open Letters Erupts Between pro-Israel and pro-Palestine Factions in Hollywood.” Only a few years ago, a headline like this would have seemed unthinkable.
The article described an increasingly open struggle between pro-Palestine and pro-Israel forces within the entertainment industry. On one side are artists and other industry figures taking a clear stand against Israel’s genocide in Gaza; on the other are defenders of Israel attempting to deny that genocide in the face of irrefutable evidence.
Long before Israeli filmmakers, production companies, and actors established a significant presence in Hollywood, the industry’s cultural infrastructure routinely elevated Israel at every opportunity. Film and television constructed a glossy image of a heroic nation whose establishment and continued survival were portrayed as miraculous, while the dispossession and violence underpinning that narrative were largely erased from view.
Palestinians, Arabs and Muslims, meanwhile, were almost invariably cast in a negative light: the uncultured and menacing ‘other,’ supposedly possessing no legitimate claim to civilization, no recognizable morality, and no history or identity worthy of serious consideration.
During Sheeran’s recent concerts at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, Macklemore expressed solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza and the occupied West Bank, called for a ‘free Palestine’ and performed ‘Hind’s Hall,’ his protest anthem honoring Hind Rajab, the Palestinian child killed by Israeli forces in Gaza.
The response to Macklemore’s courageous stand was immediate, but also predictable. The billionaires who controlled the venues reached for the weapon still at their disposal: financial power. Robert Kraft, the owner of Gillette Stadium, refused to allow Macklemore to perform there.
In the past, the story might have ended there. Macklemore would have been isolated and his career placed in jeopardy, while Sheeran, the promoters and the stadium owners continued largely untouched.
Those days are gone. Global solidarity with Macklemore—and, by extension, with Palestine—spread so rapidly that the people responsible for his removal were forced to issue a succession of defensive and sometimes contradictory explanations.
Podcasters and social-media commentators also mobilized, reaching audiences of millions and digging deeper into the controversy. They began asking who Kraft was, examining his longstanding relationship with Israel, his campaign against BDS and the enormous financial machinery behind his political advocacy. READ MORE

A colleague years ago on Earthstar Radio once remarked regarding the feud between capitalism and socialism/communism, that "It takes two wings to fly."
This sage wisdom deserves our serious consideration. Predatory capitalists are busy overthrowing Latin American governments that dare have socialist or communist economies. US Capitalists justify their aggression by pretending that capitalism is democratic and socialism isn't.
The fact that the US government feels free to overthrow socialist and communist nations is deeply disturbing, and morally wrong. At its worst, a form of evil. There is a long history of sabotage, economic warfare, invasions and coups in Latin America, most recently we see it against Venezuela and Cuba.
The United Nations has been unable to intervene as the US and its accomplices are operating on the principle that "might makes right." Because of the fatally flawed UN Charter, the UN cannot protect countries like Venezuela and Cuba -- the men, women and children become helpless victims.
The UN cannot even legally prosecute and arrest political leaders who have committed world crimes. This fatal flaw is corrected with the Earth Constitution proposed to replace the obsolete UN Charter.
The UN's inability to protect socialist nations is a reason to look to the Earth Constitution and its Earth Federation government for a solution. The EC's Article 14 gives countries the right to choose their own economic system.
Article 14.1.2 (Safeguards) "Assures freedom of choice within the member nations of the Federation of Earth to determine their internal political, economic and social systems consistent with the guarantees and protections given under this World Constitution to assure civil liberties and human rights ..."
I contend that mainstream US media like the Wall Street Journal help support US aggression by treating Capitalism like it was a sacred religion -- where there is "worship of the almighty dollar!" Moreover, the delusion is that Capitalism is
so vastly superior that targeted countries would want it even if initially forced upon them by the US military.
Capitalism for the WSJ and its ilk does not have to explain the homeless seen everywhere, or the fact that the majority of people are one paycheck away from disaster, or can't afford child care, dental care, medical care, or sending their kids to college or to trade school.
But the same criticism can be said about advocates for communist Marxists, who insist that Capitalism is bad, bad, bad. Their falsehood tends to suggest that Capitalism never did anything good for society. But in fact, many outstanding products came from creatives and Big Money who took a chance on a dream and a vision.
Both capitalism and socialism/communism have useful, positive aspects. Some Capitalist products, corporate-owned and manufactured, are outstanding in quality and quantity (such as TV sets and autos); private property an incentive with increased economic freedom. Socialism/communism picks up where Capitalism fails: By providing affordable or free medical and dental care; child care for working parents; free education; cooperatives; public and worker ownership.
It is time to let nations select their own preferred economic model without outside interference and manipulation. In my opinion the ideal model for any country is a balanced, mixed economy, using both capitalism and socialism remembering that "It takes two wings to fly." ~ R. Kotila, PhD
