Starting chazaras hashtaz if the minyan will disband
If the minyan disbanded while the congregation was in the middle of a davar sheb'kedusha, they may complete it if six or more members remain. The poskim discuss whether a davar sheb'kedusha may be started if it is known that part of the minyan will leave in the middle and putting together a different minyan is not possible. One opinion questions whether the davar sheb'kedhusha may be completed if it was known from the onset that the members of the minyan would leave.
( סעיף ב-ג וס"ק ו ו־יא; ביאורים ומוספים דרשו, 16)

If the minyan disbanded in the middle of a davar sheb'kedusha
A davar sheb'kedusha may be completed but a new one may not be started if the minyan disbanded. For example, once chazaras hashatz has begun -- even if only the opening words -- it may be completed along with kaddish Tiskabel (which is associated with Shemone Esrei). Birkas Kohanim (recited towards the end of chazaras hashatz) may not be recited, however, because it is a separate mitzva. Likewise, chazaras hashatz may not be started without a minyan even if Shemoneh Esrei was said with one, and the Haftorah may not be read without a minyan even if there was a minyan for reading the Torah.
( סעיף ב-ג וס"ק ו, י, טז, יז ו־יח; ביאורים ומוספים דרשו, 18 ו־28)
Who is counted towards a minyan?
Only adult men are counted towards the minyan for a davar sheb'kedusha; women and children are not counted. (Generally, a minor may not recite kaddish or Barechu for the minyan, but a minor in mourning is permitted to recite the mourner's kaddish at the conclusion of the tefillos.) An artificial man created through the Sefer Yitzirah-as was produced by Rav Eliyahu Ba'al Shem of Chelm-cannot be counted towards a minyan. There is an opinion which does not consider such a being as Jewish or even human.
( סעיף א וס"ק ג-ד; ביאורים ומוספים דרשו, 11 ו־13)

  • Chazal instituted that the berachos before Kriyas Shema (both at night and in the morning) begin with Barechu, an invitation to the congregation to bless Hashem. The congregation is supposed to respond with the proper blessing and then jointly begin birchos Kriyas Shema.
  • Once someone answers Barechu it is considered as though he started Birchos Kriyas Shema.
  • Anything classified as a davar sheb'kedusha may only be said with a minyan of ten adult men. Devarim sheb'kedusha include: kaddish, kedusha, Barechu, chazaras hashatz, kriyas haTorah and Birchos Kohanim.

  • Counting a child holding a sefer Torah towards a minyan

  • For which parts of tefilla can such a child be counted?
