PICTURE OF THE WEEK
ARTICLE OF THE WEEK
Many of our 8 th grade students have elected to participate in the “Names, Not Numbers” program. This program helps our students learn first-hand about the Holocaust through the production of their own oral history documentary. Our students conduct oral history interviews, preserve first hand testimonials and form inter-generational connections. The YHT faculty advisor for the "Names, Not Numbers" project is Morah Rachel Leah Mittelman.

To prepare for this “transformative experience”, the students learn interviewing techniques and are taught how to record oral history studies and literature. The students are being trained in internet research, the use of documentary film tools and in film editing. Throughout the project, professionals - journalists, filmmakers and Holocaust survivors - advise, guide and prepare the students for the interviews. Just a few weeks ago, the 8 th graders met with Ms. Jeanette Friedman, a professional journalist and writer with extensive experience in the area of Holocaust literature.

Last week, the entire 8 th grade traveled to the Museum of Jewish Heritage. In special workshops and in guided tours of the exhibits, our students deepened their understanding of the Holocaust. This daylong seminar at the museum, which was valuable and meaningful for all of the 8 th graders, provided the “Names, Not Numbers” participants with additional tools to successfully complete this project.
Each group of students will conduct a one-hour interview with a Holocaust survivor or a World War II veteran. These small segments of the history of WWII and its aftermath will be preserved via digital media. In addition to the student-created documentary, the filmmaker will produce a mini-documentary entitled "Names, Not Numbers: A Movie in the Making" that details the entire year-long program. At the culminating event at the end of the school year, YHT will honor the interviewed survivors and showcase the students' work with the screening of the documentary.
