PICTURE OF THE WEEK
ARTICLE OF THE WEEK
As part of our yearlong theme focused on teaching empathy to our students, YHT is partnering with Rebecca Lopkin, Artistic Director of Envision Theater, which is New York and New Jersey's premier educational theater company designed to serve Jewish Day Schools. 4th graders will be participating in Stand Up/ Speak Up, a unique bully prevention program using theater, where students craft an original play which is performed for younger students. Starting this past week, the fourth grade classes will participate in a ten-week series of workshops, led by Ms. Jen Winkler, one of Envision Theater's teaching artists.

Stand Up/Speak Up is an original educational program which uses interactive drama activities and creative writing combined with open-ended storytelling to teach children how to deal with bullying situations. Through a series of workshops, students learn how to best approach difficult "bullying" situations by brainstorming various solutions, problem solving as a team and using dramatic role play. By the end of the program students understand the value of becoming an “up stander” and are tasked with upholding those standards and teaching others the lessons they have learned. Students collaboratively write an original play based on a story suggested by the class. The play will be performed for grades 1-3 on Thursday, January 10.

We are enthusiastic about this special program and eager for our 4th graders to take a leading role in teaching others the importance of being an “up stander”. Thank you to the PTA for their generous contribution towards this very important program.
