Chanukah is a special time at Yeshiva Har Torah especially in our Early Childhood Program The children experience the sights, smells and sounds of Chanukah through a multidisciplinary approach to learning. Each of our units in nursery and kindergarten are studied through math, literacy, science, social studies as well as Hebrew language and the laws and customs of the chag.
The children have been reading and listening to many books about this special chag. Each book gives the yealadim an opportunity to "visualize" the story, "make predictions" as well as make "text to self connections". Children have the opportunity to write or dictate about what they would do with Chanukah gelt, where they would spin if they were a dreidel, or what they are most excited about for this chag. Inventive spelling is used as the children write their responses.
In math, dreidel games, counting, sorting and patterning skills are developed using various objects relating to Chanukah. Baking latkes and soufganiyot as well as Chanukah themed cookies provide the opportunity to "read" a recipe and observe the changes in the batter as it goes from liquid to solid.
The study of oil, transparent and translucent objects, candle wax and melting provide opportunities for children to make predictions and observations.
The Chanukah story gives the yeladim a chance to understand life long ago and the richness of our traditions.
The highlight of our Chanukah preparations is the creation of our Chanukiyot. Measuring, planning and organizing the material into unique creations is an experience that will long be remembered.
No celebration at Yeshiva Har Torah is complete without parent involvement. Parents and grandparents joined us for a hands-on Chanukah Workshop. Chanukah is truly one of the best times of the year at YHT!!
