PICTURE OF THE WEEK
ARTICLE OF THE WEEK
The Yeshiva Har Torah Education Committee is a group of lay leaders, representing various communities and grade levels within the school, who meet regularly during the school year with the administration, in an advisory capacity, about matters impacting students’ educational experience. The current list of members is here: https://www.hartorah.org/apps/pages/educationcommittee

The Education Committee met last week. The topics addressed were as follows:

  • Update on new academic programs: Two new programs were presented. The first was the new drama program, provided by Envision Theater. This year it encompasses (1) a 4th grade “upstander” curriculum, and (2) a middle school drama elective, which the school hopes will result in an end-of-year production. The second new program presented was Makerspace, currently offered in Grades 1-3. In this creative space, otherwise known as a 21st Century STEAM lab, children work collaboratively to solve relevant problems by building prototypes. This program will expand, especially once there is improved dedicated space in the forthcoming expansion.

  • Update on MAP testing: The school is replacing Terra Nova exams with computer-based MAP testing this school year. MAP testing typically occurs three times per year and allows teachers to track an individual student’s progress against him/herself, in addition to comparing students to national norms. This year, the school ran a pilot test with 3rd and 5th graders this fall. Things learned from that pilot will be used as the school rolls out the testing to Grades 1-7 this winter and spring.

  • Discussion regarding Curriculum Night: YHT is having a curriculum night on February 25th. Rather than covering the entire curriculum, the intent is to do a deep dive into one particular aspect of the curriculum each year. This year’s Curriculum Night will be about literacy in Grades 1-4. An Education Committee sub-committee is in formation and will assist the administration with planning the night. All parents are encouraged to attend.

  • Assistant Principal search: After a distinguished career in Jewish Education, Rabbi Silverman is retiring after this school year. A search for a new Assistant Principal is in progress. YHT has received significant interest and is currently vetting the candidates.

  • Developing a contact guide for parents: The school is working on a guide for who parents should contact when different kinds of issues arise. Feedback was solicited from the committee regarding what types of issues are typical and need to be included.
