PICTURE OF THE WEEK
ARTICLE OF THE WEEK
Yeshiva Har Torah, once again, was invited to send some of our 8th grade students to participate in the special Teach NYS Mission to Albany, sponsored by the Orthodox Union. Together with over 700 students and teachers from across the state, they spent the day meeting with state legislators and advocating for increased government funding for non-public schools. The students woke up early to leave YHT at 6:00 a.m. in order to be in time for the opening session. Our YHT delegation met with State Assemblyman David Weprin, who invited some of the students into the on-going Assembly chamber to witness democracy in action. Other students met with State Senator John C. Liu to share with him their concerns about increased support for STEM programming in our yeshivot. The day included a most interesting visit to the Museum of New York and a closing session with young Orthodox legislators who shared their experiences and encouraged our students to become knowledgeable and active advocates in their communities.

We were very excited to learn this week that the 2019-2020 NYS Budget became finalized. The Teach NYS Mission organizers informed us, “Our goal has always been to unite students, parents, advocates and educators to make the case for our schools and families. Three weeks ago, we brought the single largest delegation from our community to Albany, and over the past two weeks, we sent over 4,000 letters to law makers stating our support of growing this incredible program. Because of your students’ activism and part in the Mission to Albany, the nonpublic school community received over  $40 million in increased funding, a 15% increase from last year ."

This year, with the state budget now officially adopted, we are excited to share that the STEM program will be funded at $30 million for year 3 - a 100% growth over last year! In addition to the STEM funding, the CAP and MSR programs were funded at a 3.6% increase over last year’s funding, and we successfully added an additional $25 million allocation in Security funding for nonpublic schools, daycares, cultural museums, and camps on top of last year’s $15 million allocation.

Students: Thank you for your activism! As you can see, your lobbying did not go unnoticed!
