PICTURE OF THE WEEK
ARTICLE OF THE WEEK
Ms. Kletenik and Mrs. Simon received a microgrant from the Jewish Education Project to pilot a unit utilizing the school’s makerspace to bring textual gemara concepts to life. The unit, focusing on Tashmishai Kedusha , holy items in mesechet Megilla, encouraged students to use Design Thinking strategies and “failing forward” to build and demonstrate concepts from the gemara. The unit culminated in a museum display of the students’ creations. The projects were graded by the students themselves, using a rubric that the class created for the project. For example, some students designed models of shul furniture and identified the Jewish laws applying to how one should treat and dispose of the various items. The integration of text study and Design Thinking was so powerful and brought meaning to what would otherwise be abstract concepts. The students were excited to build and create, rather than simply sit and read a text. The microgrant from the Jewish Education Project helped YHT purchase important items for the project, including building materials and sewing machines. The unit will become a regular part of the curriculum going forward. Next time you are in school, make sure to stop by and see our museum in the lobby!
