ARTICLE OF THE WEEK
This week we honored Yom Hashoah in a very meaningful and age appropriate way in our kindergarten classes. We discussed the idea of memory and read a book entitled "Wilfred Gordon McDonald Partridege" by Mem Fox.  The story is about a boy who lives next door to a Senior Citizen Center. He becomes friends with some of the residents, and especially Miss Nancy. She has lost her memory. Wifred, the little boy, does not know what a memory is, and decides to ask everyone he knows. When he is finished he sets out to find something to tie into each of the explanations that he is given. He gives this collection to Miss Nancy, who regains her memory. As a follow up to this story, the children participated in a discussion, and were asked what a memory means to them. They discussed how some memories are happy, and others can make us sad. The Morot shared some of their memories as well. The lesson ended with the children lighting a yahrzeit candle, which is used to remember people who are no longer alive. Many of the children were familiar with a yahrzeit candle having seen it lit in their homes. The children were encouraged to discuss memories with their families as a follow up to the lesson.
