Summary of June 4, 2019 Education Committee Meeting
The Yeshiva Har Torah Education Committee is a group of lay leaders, representing various communities and grade levels within the school. They meet regularly during the school year with the administration, in an advisory capacity, about matters impacting students’ educational experience. Click
here to see current list of members.
The Education Committee met last week. The topics addressed were as follows:
Israel Throughout the Year curriculum -
Rabbi Silverman presented the Israel Throughout the Year curriculum. The curriculum was developed by The Lookstein Center in Bar Ilan for Grades 1-8. It is comprised of four units per year, structured around Asara Betevet, Tu BeShvat, Yom HaAtzmaut, and Yom Yerushayim. The four magazines distributed to the students discuss Israel’s history, geography, and politics with age-appropriate stories and activities. The possibility to shift to a digital version of the curriculum for a considerable financial saving for the school was discussed. The current attendance policy for the Israel Day Parade was also discussed and may be further clarified in the future.
Family program for Yom Ha’Atzmaut -
The school has an annual ‘sing-along’ for Yom Ha’Atzmaut, mostly for younger students and their parents. It was suggested that parent committees be formed to help develop plans for the Yom Ha’Azmaut event. It was felt that this may be an opportunity to engage families in the school and create a community environment.
End of the Year Feedback from members of the Education Committee -
As part of the Education Committee, members acknowledged that they learned how much time, energy, and planning goes into the everyday functioning of the school and how much parental opinions and views are valued and considered. More effective ways to disseminate the information to the larger parent body were suggested and will continue to be explored.
Family engagement -
In an effort to create a school community, the school would like to encourage more family friendly events. As a means to promote family engagement, new programs will be introduced as community-wide and school-wide family events. Some of these events will bring YHT to the individual communities and some will bring all the different communities together at YHT. The first such event will be the Yom Chesed at the school in the fall.
