PICTURE OF THE WEEK
ARTICLE OF THE WEEK
It was heartwarming to watch as smiling, enthusiastic students returned to school this week. The energy was palpable as classes began. Looking ahead at the upcoming school year is exciting.
One of our goals this year is to recommit ourselves, as a school community, to our healthy eating guidelines. Together, home and school, we share the responsibility to ensure that our students are healthy. Students spend much of their day at school and we feel a responsibility to join with our parents in teaching our students the value of healthy eating and providing them with nutritious food. We take this responsibility very seriously in light of the recent nationwide spike in childhood obesity and diabetes. Once again, we will be partnering with LIJ Cohen’s Children’s Medical Center under the guidance of pediatrician parent, Dr. Roya Samuels, in a school wide initiative, this time to educate our students about the importance of eating healthy food. We ask you to partner with us in this very important initiative by sending in only healthy snacks and lunch food to school with your child. At school, we have kicked off this program by having a nutritionist work with our faculty during teacher orientation. Teachers will be modeling healthy eating and enforcing our healthy eating guidelines. Below is a list of guidelines we will be following in school, based on feedback from Anastasia Schepers, a registered dietitian/nutritionist in the Department of Community Outreach at Cohen Children’s Medical Center, who addressed our faculty last week. Looking forward to a HEALTHY and successful school year for all of our students. Shana tovah!
  • Snacks are defined as food items that are roughly 200 calories or less. We ask that snacks be nutritious, such as fruit and vegetables, cheese and yogurt
  • Not all celebrations will be marked with food, some will be through song and dance and other activities
  • Bar and Bat Mitzvah celebrations will now be fruit and mini muffins
  • We will be distinguishing between every day foods and sometimes food (such as Rosh Chodesh and holiday treats)
  • Class siyum parties will be substantial meals rather than junk food
  • YHT is a soda free building for all events, at all times
  • We are establishing a wellness committee comprised of teachers and parent volunteers to set and maintain healthy eating guidelines as well as ensure that all hot lunches are well balanced and nutritious.
