Advent teaches us to look forward with hope even as we look backward with great appreciation. The basic formula is: The God who has done great things in the past through the coming (advent) of Jesus will do great things in the future. As we turn our attention towards Christmas and the images of nativity we should be reminded that the world changing event of Jesus' birth is the first movement in God’s Magnum Opus for how salvation is being worked out. Salvation through Christ has begun, continues, and will be concluded.
The Sundays of Advent are meant to stir memory and celebration of what has already come to be, but Advent is not confined to the past actions of God. Advent is also, crucially, a celebration of what God is doing and of that which God will do.
