The Bible describes God as Jehovah-Rophe (or Jehovah-Rapha) more than 60 times. Jehovah means "God" and Rophe or Rapha means "to restore," "to heal," or "to make healthful."
In
Exodus 15:26, God promised Moses and the people of Israel, "If you listen carefully to the Lord your God and do what is right in his eyes, if you pay attention to his commands and keep all his decrees, I will not bring on you any of the diseases I brought on the Egyptians, for I am the Lord, who heals you."
Healer is an integral part of God's character. God cares about every area of your health - your physical health, your mental and emotional well-being as well as your spiritual vitality (
Psalm 103:2-3). When we understand that God is Jehovah-Rophe, the Great Physician, we recognize that no healing happens apart from Him. Only He can provide lasting healing from our brokenness.
So often, we want the healing without the dealing. But God has to deal with the source of our pain - the rejection, the hurt, or perhaps the betrayal - to heal us.
Our Healer has never and will never change (
Malachi 3:6).
Jesus still does miracles. God works through modern medicine, just like He worked through ancient Israel's laws to protect them from disease.
The Gospel is the physical, moral, and spiritual remedy for all people. Because in Christ, we have eternal life, the guidance of the Holy Spirit, and connection with God (
Isaiah 53:5).
Reflect:
When you think about your overall health, what can you begin to give God today for healing? What are you grateful to God for regarding your health today?
All persons working with children and youth are required to be CAPI (Child Abuse Potential Inventory) certified. October will be the last opportunity this year to take the required classes. Please register today on

Old Testament Class Offerings
F19-101 - The Book of Ruth: No More Drama! - A Reflection of Sisterly Love
Instructor: Rev. Adriane Blair Wise
We live in a society that glamorizes the behavior of women who are catty, backbiting, and untrustworthy, as if it is a normal condition of female dynamics. This class will explore the relationship between Naomi and Ruth, and the example of loyalty, friendship, commitment, and sisterhood they demonstrate for us today.
F19-102 - The Book of Psalms: Psalm 46 - How to Quieten the Anxious Mind
Instructor: Dr. Sherrill McMillan
Bothered by anxiety? This class will offer an exhaustive look at anxiety: its causes, symptoms, and treatment options particularly in the light of Psalm 46. What is God saying to us in these unpredictable times that challenge us with health, safety, job, and relationship concerns? How can we quieten the anxious mind and spirit? The class discussions will offer relief from anxiety in the the midst of a world that threatens our emotional and spiritual health.
F19-103 - The Book of Psalms: Psalms for Every Season
Instructor: Rev. Brenda Girton-Mitchell
The Book of Psalms is a powerful Biblical resource and is the most widely read of all the books of the Bible. Psalms for Every Season will be an inventory of these scriptures. The course is designed to help participants explore this remarkable collection of poems, hymns, and prayers while developing an enhanced appreciation of their importance. Participants will engage in activities that lead to experiences with the Psalms, as well as identify ways the readings become a source of comfort, courage, celebration, wisdom, and worship.
New Testament Class Offerings
F19-104 - The Book of Ephesians: Lessons in Christian Living
Instructor: Dr. Michael Black
In the Book of Ephesians, the Apostle Paul explains the mystery of the Church, while giving practical insight into living as a believer in Jesus Christ. The class will focus on understanding who you are in Christ, behavioral expectations of Christians, and the spiritual blessings that are given to those who obey His teachings.
F19-105 - The Book of Hebrews: The Key to Living by Faith
Instructor: Dr. Jesse Wood
This masterful document was written to demonstrate the exclusiveness and superiority of the new covenant. The overarching theme is that Christianity is superior to Judaism because Christ is Supreme and is completely sufficient for salvation. Our focus will be on the Superiority of Christ and the Superiority of Faith. The scriptural foundation for this course of study will be, "Who being the brightness of His glory, and the express image of His person, and upholding all things by the word of His power, when he had by Himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high." ~Hebrews 1:3

This Week's Lesson...
Faith Saves
CeCe Winans, a lyrical stylist, recorded a song some years ago titled "Alabaster Box." This song tells the story of a woman besieged with sin, trauma, and a sense of worthlessness. Winans sings that the woman stumbled through her tears, making her way through the room of notable religious leaders as they looked at her scornfully; speaking in angry whispers wondering why she was there. This woman was not called by name; in fact, she is nameless in scripture as if her identify did not matter. In spite of being ignored and talked about she pressed her way through shame and tears. She spoke no words but everything that she said--through her actions--was heard by those who were there. This nameless woman demonstrated her praise by pouring out her love for the Master from a box of alabaster which contained a very expensive perfume. She continued by washing Jesus' feet with her tears and drying them with her hair. This act of humility, remorse, and repentance touched Jesus in a special way.
In our lesson this week, we will look at how this nameless woman shows hospitality in this simply act of worship. She was not viewed as a sinner but as someone who deserved forgiveness and who took the necessary steps to demonstrate that she was willing and receptive to change her behavior which led to her salvation. This lesson further addresses the hypocrisy of the religious leaders who condemned her but were unwilling to look at the sin in their own lives. Join us as we take a deep dive into Jesus' connection to those who are deemed less than respectable.
In this week's lesson we will,
1) EXAMINE how the sinful woman demonstrated her love and gratitude to Jesus,
2)REFLECT on how the woman's love and devotion led her to cross social barriers to anoint Jesus, and
3)BECOMEemboldened to resist social pressures that would prevent expressions of love and gratitude for our salvation.
Bible Background: Luke 7:36-50
Devotional Reading: John 13:3-11
Why are we so quick to dismiss and judge people who are different?
Sunday School will begin 9:00 a.m. in Room C-43
And stood at his feet behind him weeping, and began to wash his feet with tears,
and did wipe them with the hairs of her head, and kissed his feet,
and anointed them with the ointment.
~Luke 7:38 (KJV)

Matthew 25 Ministries
It's Time to Give Gifts from the Heart for Christmas!
We need your help to bless school-age children and families within Metropolitan; the William Paca Elementary School in Landover, MD; and Berwyn Heights Elementary School in Berwyn Heights, MD with new toys and clothing items.
Sign-up forms are available at the Gifts From the Heart table located just outside of the church entrance each Sunday until Sunday, November 3, 2019. Donor registration and requests for assistance must be submitted by Sunday, November 3 also.
This year, Safeway Feast of Sharing is celebrating its 20th Anniversary. Metropolitan was one of the founding community partners that helped Safeway Stores, Inc., launch what has become an annual event feeding 5000 Seniors, Homeless persons, and TANIF recipients. Metropolitan has been the beacon that has drawn thousands of volunteers from various religious communities to work together to feed 5000, bringing hope and good will to all who attended.
This year, in addition to serving the Seniors during the pre-dinner time, Metropolitan is asked to donate new or gently used winter wear - coats, hats, gloves, boots, sweaters, etc., (all washed or dry cleaned) and hanging on coat hangers. Items may be brought to the church beginning the 2nd Sunday in November through the fourth Sunday. One of our Feast of Sharing volunteers will accept your donations and take them to the Convention Center for the clothing distribution that is offered during the Feast of Sharing.
Volunteers are needed from November 22-27. If anyone is interested in serving as a volunteer this year, you may register here. There are many areas in which to serve.
Hospitality is a gift from God. He has blessed us, Metropolitan, because He cares. Now, while we are able, let us show that we care by blessing others. "And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me." ~Matthew 25:40.
Matthew 25 Ministries welcomes you to join in the work of serving those who are most vulnerable in our community. Join us for our next team meeting,

Movie Night at The Met!
Come join the Metropolitan Music and Arts Ministry for a fun family-friendly film screening on Friday, November 8. We will watch Amazing Grace!
"It's the closest thing to witnessing a miracle - just some cameras, a crowd and a voice touched by God. Over two days in January of 1972,
Aretha Franklin got up to sing out her gospel at the New Temple Missionary Baptist Church in Watts, backed by the Southern California Community Choir. A film crew was there to catch the Queen of Soul blow the roof off the place. Not to get closer to the Lord - surely He was already listening - but to testify to His glory with the Black church music that helped form her and fired her faith. The live recording of the concert became Franklin's biggest bestseller. Eight months after Franklin's
passing at the age of 76, it still is."
- Rolling Stone Magazine
Our youth will view
Sing. In a city of humanoid animals, a hustling theater impresario's attempt to save his theater with a singing competition becomes grander than he anticipates even as its finalists find that their lives will never be the same.
Movie Night provides a great opportunity to invite your friends, neighbors, and co-workers to a family-friendly event. Movie night will be in C43 and a light fare will be available at 6:30 PM. The movie will start promptly at 7 PM with a brief discussion about the movie and its impact to follow.
Still need to have your photo taken? Contact Chuck Frink by calling the Church Office or by emailing

A Relationship with God
The Lord wants so much more than to just visit you during a difficult time in your life. He wants to be involved in your life forever. This is the purpose for which you were born.
"Salvation is a gift. You need to ask Jesus for it. He has died and paid the price. But unless you ask Him to be your Savior and Lord, you do not have a relationship with Him," says Dee Brestin.
In order to be saved from this bleak existence, you must first believe and then ask. Salvation is not something you earn; it is a free gift of God. "Until now you have asked for nothing in My name; ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be made full" (John 16:24 NASB).
Savior God, my life has a specific purpose in You. Help me to live out that purpose. Amen.
