Although Governor Hogan relaxed the stay at home order in Maryland on Friday, May 15 at 5 PM, Prince George's County continues to observe a stay at home order issued by County Executive Angela Alsobrooks, until June 1. The instances of COVID-19 are extremely high in Prince George's County. Metropolitan's IAMA Counseling Ministry, Health and Wellness Ministry, and Community Resources sections below offer various resources and information that will help you during this time. Please stay home and stay safe.
I have had a lot of time to think about this situation. I have decided that the best time to regather is when it's safe. I'm not listening to the President or to the southern Governors. I want people to be safe! When they return to FedEx Stadium for football, it's safe! I want my members to stay safe. Don't grow weary in well doing; in due season you will reap if you do not faint! - Dr. Maurice Watson

Three months ago, we were living our normal lives. The focus of our spring quarter of Sunday school was Justice and the Prophets. Throughout this quarter we reviewed the books of Amos, Habakkuk, Micah, Malachi, Zephaniah, and Zechariah who are all considered to be minor prophets. We also reviewed two major prophets Isaiah and Jeremiah along with the book of Esther who was the Jewish Queen of Persia. Each book focused on how God requires justice. Justice is defined as "the quality of being just; righteousness, equitableness, or moral rightness to uphold the 'justice' of a cause." Simply stated, justice is a concept on ethics and law that means people should behave in a way that is fair, equal, and balanced for everyone. Also, during this time the World Health Organization (WHO) declared a global health pandemic--the Novel Coronavirus, better known as COVID-19--that began to invade our lives. The country has been on lock down since the middle of March. As the country slowly begins to reopen, we are left with more questions than answers. Some would argue that the Federal Government had an inadequate response to this crisis and as a result over 100,000 people have died, just in the United States. Even in the midst of all of this, God is still on the throne. God still requires justice for His people. In the final installment of our quarterly lessons, we will study the life and work of the prophet Hosea.
Bible Background ~Hosea 11
Devotional Reading ~Deuteronomy 8:11-20
In our lesson this week, we will examine a period of time in Israel's history when the people were unfaithful to God through worship. Hosea prophesied to the northern Kingdom about forty years before its fall and eventual destruction. Hosea, like his contemporaries Isaiah and Micah, warned the Israelites to return to God before it was too late. However, Israel continued to seek out other relationships--namely, with the Assyrians and the Egyptians. Like a woman caught up in an adulterous affair, Israel was continually unfaithful. Hosea had an unusual personal life. He was commanded by God to marry a prostitute named Gomer (Hosea 1:2-9). His unhappy family experience was an object lesson of the sin or "harlotry" of the nation of Israel in rejecting the one true God and violating its covenant relationship with Him. Gomer eventually leaves Hosea and returns to a life of prostitution. Hosea seeks to bring his wife back to him and his love for her refused die. God uses the life of Hosea to demonstrate His steadfast love to His own unfaithful wife--Israel. Join us this week as we conclude our study of the Old Testament Prophets.
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to:
1)COMPARE prosperity as a worldly goal with the Godly virtues of love and justice,
2)REGRET the occasions where we have made material prosperity a greedy, covetous goal, and
3)PRACTICE love and justice as key virtues.
Therefore, turn thou to thy God: keep mercy and judgment, and wait on thy God continually.
~Hosea 12:6 (KJV)

BIBLE STUDY
Church-wide Bible Study is on hiatus until June 9.
S20-101 - The Book of Ruth: Decisions Determine Destiny
Instructor: Rev. Adriane Blair Wise
What is the basis of your decision-making? It's been said that we are the sum total of our decisions, and with every decision we make, good or bad, we are mapping out a certain path for our lives. Have you ever second-guessed a decision? We are living in a season unlike any we have experienced in our lifetime, and contemplating the decisions we make is even more critical because choices bring consequences. When you make a decision, it not only affects your life, but may affect the lives of many others, sometimes, for generations to come. In The Book of Ruth, we will explore the benefits of making right choices and how they can change the trajectory of your destiny.
S20-102 - The Book of Psalms: Psalms for Every Season
Instructor: Rev. Brenda Girton-Mitchell
The Book of Psalms is a powerful Biblical resource and is the most widely read of all the books of the Bible. Psalms for Every Season will be an inventory of these Scriptures. The course is designed to help participants explore this remarkable collection of poems, hymns, and prayers while developing an enhanced appreciation of their importance. Participants will engage in activities that lead to experiences with the Psalms, as well as identify ways the readings become a source of comfort, courage, celebration, wisdom, and worship.
New Testament Class Offerings
S20-103 - The Book of Ephesians: Lessons in Christian Living
Instructor: Dr. Michael Black
In the Book of Ephesians, the Apostle Paul explains the mystery of the Church, while giving practical insight into living as a believer in Jesus Christ. The class will focus on understanding who you are in Christ, behavioral expectations of Christians, and the spiritual blessings that are given to those who obey His teachings.
S20-104 - The Book of Philippians: Be Anxious for Nothing?
Instructor: Dr. Sherrill McMillan
Anxiety is that fearful and uncertain feeling we get when we don't know what will happen in our lives tomorrow or the next day. Whether it's uncertainty about job security, family or relationship concerns, or a frustrating political system, any new occurrence only exacerbates the anxiety we're already experiencing. Enter Coronavirus that has not only brought new health concerns but is causing us to have to alter our lifestyles in unprecedented ways. The Apostle Paul offers us hope and insights in this four-week journey into the Book of Philippians.
S20-105 - The Book of Hebrews: The Key to Living by Faith
Instructor: Dr. Jesse Wood
This masterful document was written to demonstrate the exclusiveness and superiority of the new covenant. The overarching theme is that Christianity is superior to Judaism because Christ is Supreme and is completely sufficient for salvation. Our focus will be on the Superiority of Christ and the Superiority of Faith. The scriptural foundation for this course of study will be, "Who being the brightness of His glory, and the express image of His person, and upholding all things by the word of His power, when he had by Himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high." ~Hebrews 1:3
SAVE THE DATE for our WOMEN'S BIBLE STUDY
Becoming an Overcomer
When you introduce yourself to someone for the first time, you may define yourself by disclosing your name, profession, and interests. Those factors help our culture define us, but are they enough? There are bigger questions our culture can't answer: "Who am I?" "Why do I matter?" And before asking, "Who am I?" you must first answer, "Who is God?" In this Bible study we will help you understand how you can be transformed by the Gospel of Christ, define yourself by God's Word instead of by cultural standards, and discover the unique way God has gifted you to serve others.
Class has been extended until further notice on Thursdays at 7 PM via Zoom! Please pre-register for the class on REALM. Pre-registration is required to participate. Questions? Contact Rev. Adriane Blair Wise at awise@metropolitanbaptist.orgfor class details.

Diaconate Ministry
In times of challenge, it is so important to stay connected. Metropolitan's Servants continue to reach out to our Seniors to show how much Metropolitan Cares. We call, send cards and letters, grocery shop and deliver food and medicines, and even coach on the use of electronics. Our Seniors bring much more joy to us than we could ever give to them.
In the midst of our service, we find renewed energy in staying connected with one another. We text and call each other, share prayer calls, and share in Zoom meetings where we laugh out loud and pray together. While we miss our weekly fellowship in the "building," in many ways we are closer than ever because our fellowship is intentional. We make special efforts to stay connected.
Join us in staying connected by reaching out to members of our Metropolitan Family today--especially our Seniors. You'll be amazed at how one phone call can bring joy the person you called--and to you!
Contact the Diaconate atservants@metropolitanbaptist.orgto help us continue to show you how much Metropolitan Cares! Caregivers please share the names and contact information of the Seniors you serve so that our Servants may connect with them.
Please join the Metropolitan Diaconate in prayer for God's continued protection of our Metropolitan Family and offer special prayers for our beloved Seniors, their caregivers, and those on the frontline of service.

IAMA Counseling Ministry
MAY IS MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS MONTH
Take Time to Think and Give Thanks
How are you coping? When that question is posed, we often have the usual church answers. But I wonder if you've stopped to think about these questions. How you are feeling? What help do you need? How you are coping? What have you lost to COVID-19? I would not be surprised if you said you had not considered these questions. We've been pushed to pretend that we are succeeding at doing "business as normal." Many of us have stumbled into the virtual realm, others have done so seamlessly. Some have converted sacred family spaces to secular workspaces. Others have become teachers overnight. The mantra has been to "keep it moving," even though I believe God expected that we would stop, or at least pause to think about how we feel.
I took this past Friday off so that I could contemplate those questions. If you haven't spent the day like this with God before, it may look like this. No alarm clock, wakeup on your own. Pray. Invite God in. Tell God how you feel. Ask for wisdom, knowledge, understanding, and guidance. Intercede for others. Read the Bible. Listen for God's reply. Write-anything and everything. Go for a walk or run and notice God at work--the chirping of the birds, the blooming flowers, the different shades of green in the grass.
Remind yourself, if He takes care of the birds, how much more will He take care of you. Whenever you think, Give Thanks! Finally, know it is okay not to be okay because these are not normal times. Reach out when you need to. Metropolitan cares about you.

These funds will help us to replenish our pantry with the assistance of the Capital Area Food Bank. To request assistance or for further information, contact Rev. Brenda Girton-Mitchell at bgirtonmitchell@metropolitanbaptist.org.

O give thanks to the Lord of lords: for His mercy endureth forever.
- Psalms 136:1-3 (KJV)
Heavenly Father, thank You for waking us up in sound mind and body. Thank You, for allowing us to be able to see the trees go from little buds, to full leaves, to red leaves to just a skeleton. Thank You, for letting us feel the wind on our faces. Thank You, for letting us hear the birds sing. Thank You, for letting us taste and see that You are good. (Psalms 34:8 NKJV) (Numbers 11:1 KJV) Thank You, for a roof over our head, clothes on our backs, and food on our table. Thank You, Lord for Jesus, Your gift of peace. Thank You, for we have no complaints about this life, because You have been mighty good to us. Thank You, Lord for these and all other needful blessing You have given us. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.

Metropolitan Baptist Church | 1200 Mercantile Lane, Largo, MD 20774
In response to the continued spread of Coronavirus (COVID-19) and Prince George's County's County Executive Angela Alsobrooks' stay at home order through June 1, 2020. Metropolitan Baptist Church will not hold worship services and the Church Office will be closed until further notice. Please call (202) 238-5000 should you need assistance, leave a message, and your call will be promptly returned. Please continue to observe social distancing, wear masks and gloves when in public, and stay at home as much as possible. Stay home and stay well.
Governor Hogan announced Maryland's stay at home order was lifted on Friday, May 15 at 5 PM and there are now expanded opportunities for outdoor exercise and recreation, and some indoor activity; however, everyone is encouraged to continue to practice CDC safety protocols at all times. Metropolitan wants you and your loved ones to remain safe. Metropolitan Baptist Church will continue virtual worship and ministry until further notice.
All Church-wide events and ministry activities previously scheduled are postponed until further notice. We have and are taking precautionary steps to keep everyone as safe as possible by using this time to contract an external cleaning company to deep clean and disinfect our edifice.
Please take note of these additional immediate precautionary steps:
Our Church Office and building are closed until further notice. Our staff is working remotely.
Until we are physically able to worship together, we are moving our ministry online. Our Bible Study, Sunday School, Children's Church, Youth Church and many other ministry/community activities are now available to you via Zoom Video or Phone Conference. Please see details for each below under ministry announcements.
If you have an emergency or death in your family, please call the church's main number (202) 238-5000, leave a message, and your call will be promptly returned. The church's phone lines are being closely monitored during this time.
We encourage you to continue ministry business as you are able via these preferred online resources: Conference Calls (freeconferencecall.com) or Video Chats (zoom.com).
Tune in to our Livestream on Sundays for a NEW message from Pastor Watson, ministry highlights, church announcements, and more!
We encourage you to continue to take the following precautionary steps:
Wash your hands frequently, for at least 20 seconds, with soap and water, or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
Cover your mouth and nose while coughing or sneezing into your elbow or use a tissue and throw it away; do not cough or sneeze into your hands.
Avoid close contact with people who are sick and practice social distancing by staying at least 6 feet away from other people and avoid groups of more than 10 people.
If you are sick, stay home from work, school, church, and social gatherings.
Try NOT to touch your eyes, nose, or mouth with unwashed hands.
NO HANDSHAKING! Use a fist bump, slight bow, elbow bump, etc.
Use ONLY your knuckle to touch light switches, elevator buttons, etc. Lift the gasoline dispenser with a paper towel or use a disposable glove.
Keep a bottle of hand sanitizer and/or Clorox wipes available at each of your home's entrances AND in your car or bag for use after pumping gas or touching other contaminated objects when you can't immediately wash your hands.
Stock up on medications, food, and other essentials you may need in the event of quarantine. If you are a Senior, please ask a younger family member or friend to pick items up for you.
Stay Home! If you must go out, wear a cloth mask and gloves.
Wear a mask or face covering while inside a retail establishment or while riding public transportation. It's a gubernatorial executive order in Maryland effective Saturday, April 18, 2020.
Check on your fellow Metropolitan loved ones (especially our Seniors) and show them how much you CARE! Utilize apps like REALM, FaceTime, and Skype to connect.
