Devotion for Friday, June 5
John 12:46
I have come as light into the world,
so that everyone who believes in me should not remain in the darkness.
Have you ever been in the dark? Say a light bulb suddenly pops and you stand there in the dark unable to see your own hand in front of your face. What do you do? One thing is to wait for our eyes to adjust so you can see and when that happens, we begin to move towards the light and find our way out.
When we think about light, it really is something that chases away the dark. Stop for a moment after you read this and let it sink in. Where does the dark go when the light overtakes it?
Were you afraid of the dark when you were a child? How many of you needed or wanted their door left open so a little hallway light came in or a night light? Darkness is cold, scary and uninviting and so how can we get anything done? Now bring in that light no matter how bright and it makes us feel so much better and we can do things we were unable to do in the dark. This is what you can bring to someone else; a simple smile or gesture or just a few minutes to sit and listen to someone. I've given that few minutes to someone and you can just see the light beginning to shine in that person; it happens right in front of you!! Words that you say can leave an everlasting impact on someone just as having a flashlight when the power goes out.
We can trade in our sins to receive that light simply by knowing and trusting Jesus. Sharing the light of Christ with others even though we are not aware of it. Remember that one gesture from you can mean the world to someone else. I've seen it and I've received it and it is amazing! Darkness quickly disappears and the light begins to shine.
In the creation story God said, "Let there be light and there was light, and it was good." And then He divided the light from the darkness. It didn't stop there. When He gave us Christ, he gave us light and it was up to us to accept that or reject it.
Jesus is the light of the world! Light overcomes the dark! When we move towards the light of Jesus Christ, we can leave the darkness behind!
Father God, we cant thank you enough for the light that you brought into this world. Help us to share that light with others. We ask to be there when someone feels darkness filling their lives so that we can shine the light and bring to an end to the darkness As I know this what we were meant to do! Amen.
