FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla.: Lawmakers, regulators and gaming industry executives will have a front seat to one of the most hotly debated gaming topics, Daily Fantasy Sports (DFS), as the National Council of Legislators from Gaming States kicks off its Winter Meeting at the Hilton Fort Lauderdale Marina.

While state legislators, regulators, and the gaming industry as a whole, have focused primarily on traditional gambling, sports wagering and igaming for the past decade, a growing number of companies focused on Daily Fantasy Sports have entered the fray, offering games that some call innovative but others say bear too close a resemblance to sports betting. At the NCLGS meeting, a panel of industry experts, a journalist and a regulator will sort this out in a discussion led by NCLGS President Shawn Fluharty, a Delegate from West Virginia. The session will conclude with Q&A from the audience.

Presenters will include:

  • Matt Carey, Reporter, VIXIO GamblingCompliance
  • Andromeda Morrison, General Counsel & Director of Skill Games, Ohio Casino Control Commission
  • Derek Schmidt, former Kansas Attorney General and Partner, Husch Blackwell
  • Stacie Stern, Vice President Government Affairs and Partnerships, Underdog Fantasy

The session on DFS will be one of 12 sessions chaired by legislative leaders from around the country during the four-day event. Also included in the program will be receptions on Wednesday and Thursday nights, sponsored by GLI and IGT respectively. Attendees will have the opportunity to mingle with industry insiders, state legislators, and regulators on an informal basis.

The NCLGS room block has closed, but we strongly encourage attendees who haven’t booked rooms to contact the Hilton Fort Lauderdale Marina directly as rooms are still available. Lodging is also available at the many surrounding hotels.

More than 50 industry professionals will participate as speakers throughout the conference, which brings together hundreds of gaming leaders, legislators, regulators, media and other insiders to examine the trends, challenges and critical issues facing the industry today.

In addition, the Sports Betting Regulators Association (SBRA) will once again co-locate with NCLGS, meeting on the afternoon of January 3. All NCLGS attendees are welcome to attend.

The Board of Directors of NCLGS is also delighted to invite NCLGS attendees to two off-site events:

  • 1S/T Technology and The Stronach Group will sponsor an “Afternoon at the Races” at historic Gulfstream Park on the afternoon of January 5.
  • The world-famous Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino will host a reception to close out the conference on the afternoon of January 6.
