THE NEW JERUSALEM PART 4
Revelation 21:10-27 describes the New Jerusalem. It has beauty and grandeur unmatched in our physical world of today. It already exists in the heavens above and the spirits of our departed saints are already there. It will come down to the new earth after the old earth is destroyed.
Verses 18-21 describe its beauty on the inside. Each of its twelve foundations was garnished with a precious jewel. The gemstones for each foundation are as follows:
We see in verse 14 that the twelve foundations were named after the twelve apostles. The pattern found in Exodus 18:16-21 prophetically parallels this New Jerusalem pattern. It would indicate that each foundation is named for one apostle and the gemstone of that foundation represents that apostle.
The breastplate of the high priest (Exodus 28) gives a foursquare configuration (like the foursquare city) and is set with twelve gemstones (four rows of three each just like Israel’s encampment in the wilderness around the tabernacle) and each breastplate gem represents one of the twelve tribes of Israel.
The foursquare configuration of the high priest’s breastplate and his entry into God’s presence in the Tabernacle “Holy of Holies” (most holy place) is the prophetic type of the “City foursquare,” the New Jerusalem where we can now enter into the holy place with Him.
This all shows that God has laid out his plan from beginning to end in His word. What is seen from the Old testament has been revealed and is still being yet fulfilled in the New testament “church age” in which we now live and yet shall be living in the future.
Tomorrow we will conclude our “look” into New Jerusalem, the “heavenly city” now existent that will come to the “new earth.”
