In 2015, shortly after white supremacist Dylan Roof walked into a black church during Bible study and killed Clementa C. Pinckney, Cynthia Marie Graham Hurd, Malcom Graham, Susie Jackson, Ethel Lee Lance, Depayne Middleton, Tywanza Sanders, Daniel L. Simmons, Sharonda Coleman-Singleton, and Myra Thompson, activist Bree Newsome climbed the 30-foot flagpole on the state capitol grounds and removed the Confederate Battle Flag shouting, “You come against me with hatred, and oppression, and violence. I come against you in the name of God. This flag comes down today.” The flag was put back up shortly afterward, but was eventually removed from state properties, revitalizing conversations about Confederate monuments in public spaces.
