On this Memorial Day, we offer a prayer for those who died in service to our country.

In your hands, O Lord,

we humbly entrust our

brothers and sisters.

In this life you embraced them with your tender love;

deliver them now from every evil

and bid them eternal rest. Amen.

Today's Scripture

Feast of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary

Taking the Gospel to Prayer

Full disclosure: I am going to make a connection for prayer today that is not substantively rooted in Scripture scholarship.

Nonetheless, our Gospel is the story of two ordinary women whom God called to do extraordinary things. Elizabeth was beyond child-bearing age when she brought John the Baptist into the world. Mary said "yes" and became the mother of the Messiah. They responded to their calling and the world was changed.

As a nation today, we remember the men and women who gave their lives in the service of our country. Their sacrifices also changed our world.

So it falls to us both in action and in prayer today: What is the Lord calling me/us to do? Faithful response to God's call will continue to change the world. Let us listen carefully and follow Him.

Lord Jesus, help me to grow closer to You today.
