Did you know that between 30 to 40% of the US food supply is wasted each year?1 We as consumers can play a large part to reduce this figure. Not only could this food go to feed families in need, reducing food waste can save us money and help protect the environment. The best way to reduce food waste is to prevent it in the first place.
There are simple steps you can take at the grocery store, eating out and at home to prevent and reduce food waste.2
At the grocery store:
-
Plan your meals and make a shopping list. Download our “Cook This, Buy That” planner.
- Check your fridge and pantry before heading out and stick to your list in the store. Better yet, take a #shelfie to have a picture reference for when you are at the store.
- Purchase imperfect fruits and vegetables that are often picked over.
Eating out:
-
Ask for smaller portion sizes or share a meal when possible.
- Get a to-go box and eat the leftovers.
At home:
-
Use your fridge and freezer to store perishables and leftovers.
- Check often to see what you have and what needs to be eaten to avoid throwing anything out.
- Store pantry staples like whole grain pasta, lentils and brown rice in clear containers. It will be easier to see what you have and what you might need to add to your grocery list.
- Create fun meals or snacks with leftovers or foods that may go bad if not eaten soon.
