Women in BME Luncheon: Jennifer West
Support the people in your network

For even the most accomplished people, career paths are often less thought out than some might think, said Dr. Jennifer West at the BMES Women in BME Luncheon Friday. At one point, West thought she'd pursue being a veterinarian tech. She ended up pursing biomedical engineering, and is currently a professor at Duke University conducting  biomaterials and tissue engineering research.

Even though careers can take unexpected turns, one thing that should stay constant is building a solid network of colleagues, and supporting those colleagues, West said.

"It is important to support all the people in your network," she said to nearly 500 attendees of the lunch. From acting as a mentor, to nominating colleagues for awards, West stressed the importance of continually nurturing networks.

Athanasiou Award Session and Journal Awards
The inaugural Athanasiou Annals of Biomedical Engineering Student Awards session took place Friday afternoon at the 2018 BMES Annual Meeting.

The purpose of the Athanasiou endowment is to further the field of biomedical engineering. The initial funding for the endowment came from a generous series of gifts from Kyriacos A Athanasiou and his wife Kiley Athanasiou, who both attended the event.

Athanasiou is the former editor in chief of the Annals of Biomedical Engineering. The current editor, Stefan Duma, organized today's event.

Earlier in the day, the Society's three journals presented their awards for the most cited, most downloaded and editors' choice awards.

NIH NIBIB Lecture: Lihong V. Wang

The continuing partnership between NIH NIBIB and BMES continued today with Dr. Lihong V. Wang presenting the NIH NIBIB Lecture.

Wang's talk focused on his imaging research.

The talk was titled World's Deepest-Penetration and Fastest Cameras: Photoacoustic Tomography and Compressed Ultrafast Photography.

The Wallace H. Coulter Award for Healthcare Innovation Award: Josh Makower

For Dr. Josh Makower, one of the biggest mistakes researchers make is allowing their own biases get in the way of true innovation.

"Invention is something everyone here can do," Makower said. "You don't have to be Albert Einstein. The inventions come from need. The hard part is framing the need right and eliminating your biases. If you do it right you can have a hugely positive impact on people's lives."
