TUESDAY CHECK-IN
USING ZOOM FOR REMOTE LEARNING
Jeffco now has a centrally managed, secure, enterprise version of Zoom available. We are working to get everyone - students, teachers, school and district administrators - access to the tool as quickly as possible. You should receive communication from your student’s teacher(s) if they are choosing to use this tool for video conferencing.

We know that “Zoombombings” and other security concerns have recently been in the news causing some school districts to ban Zoom. What Jeffco will be using is an enterprise - not a free, personal - version of Zoom that allows our IT staff to configure district virtual conference rooms following FBI guidance to minimize the risk of meeting hijackings and other nefarious activities. The enterprise version also provides comprehensive use logging which, in combination with staff professional development, will be used to further protect students and staff members. A more detailed explanation of the security of Zoom can be found here .

We are working to create and release support information and materials for Zoom as well. You will be able to find those on our technical resources page for students, families, and the community and on our digital tools page for students and their families .
A TIP FROM HEALTH SERVICES
FROM THE GIFTED AND TALENTED (GT) DEPARTMENT
The GT Department will continue working with schools to support Advanced Learning Plan (ALP) implementation, progress monitoring, and goal completion for identified gifted learners this year. We will also continue to accept GT identification referrals, though we may not be able to make determinations until we have a complete body of evidence when normal operations resume.

Consider the following in supporting your gifted learner in a remote environment
Social Emotional Considerations:
Some of our students may be hesitant with change, struggle with lack of normalcy/schedule/predictability, get frustrated, become overwhelmed, and experience increased sensitivity to words, sounds, light, etc. Many gifted and twice-exceptional students may show some of these ‘overexcitabilities’ that can make remote learning more challenging. Encourage positivity and hope in relation to their current situation. See this article, Helping Your Child Manage Stress Through Mindfulness , from the National Association for Gifted Children’s (NAGC) Parenting for High Potential.
Academic Considerations:
  • If students are feeling like the pace of learning is too slow, encourage them to explore ‘passion projects’ related to the content where they can go deeper with learning related to their interests.
  • If students feel the format of learning is too challenging, encourage them to self-advocate with their teachers in a positive way.
Remember, all of us are figuring our way through this new environment, teachers included. See this Gifted Student Self-Advocacy Tip Sheet from NAGC for ideas on this.
For additional support and ideas for both academic and social emotional considerations, reach out to your child’s GT Resource Teacher during the office hours noted above.
REMINDER: LEARNING AT HOME SURVEY
As we shared this past Friday, we want to hear your stories, understand your needs, and get your opinions about the remote learning experience. Don't forget about our  family survey and our student survey (only accessible when students log in to a student Google account). We appreciate your time!
