God Danced the Day You Were Born…

The quote above is often recited as having come from the Holy Scriptures, but it is not to be found anywhere in the Bible! Somehow, somewhere, this saying appeared within the last two or three decades, and now is repeated so much that it is mistaken for scripture!
Yet, it does make one think. We read in Genesis 1:27, “So God created humankind in his image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.” As we all know, at each incremental step of creation throughout Genesis 1, God would evaluate His work at the end of every day: “And God saw that it was good” (Genesis 1:4, 12, 18, 25), but after the creation of humankind, “God saw everything that he had made, and indeed, it was very good” (Genesis 1:31a). Humans are created in the image of God and this is not just good, but very good.
God may not have danced the day He created us, (and frankly, that strays a bit too much into anthropomorphizing God for me!) but the evidence is that God was indeed very pleased with His work in creating humankind. It is we humans, as shown beginning in Genesis 2, who continue to separate ourselves from God and God’s desires for us and all humankind. Unfortunately, that is the expanse of the Biblical evidence, humankind doing what they want to do and separating themselves from relationship with God… over and over and over again.
The Incarnation, God becoming human, is God’s ultimate statement of love for and fidelity to the fleshy, fallen humankind made in the very image of God. How can we show that same love and fidelity to God? What would that look like in your life today? And, with only one week behind us, what would that look like in 2022?
