Did I Forget Something?

“Therefore, I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing?”
Matthew 6:25

Growing up, my mother often reminded me to do rudimentary daily habits. “Remember to brush your teeth,” she would say as I was quickly rushed off to school. “Bring down your dirty laundry!” she would shout after I came home from soccer practice. These reminders, while they seemed irksome, helped to form good habits. And they continued even into my 20s. Whenever I returned home while on break from college, so, too, would my mom’s verbal reminders. And to be honest, I needed to hear them!

As Christians, we also need reminders. So much so that God saw fit to design our week in a way that reserved one day for his people to be reminded. Yes, I am talking about Sunday — a day in which we gather to worship and remember the Gospel story.

One aspect of God’s story that I need constant reminder of is His provision. Don’t get me wrong, I know that God is good, however, my mind is prone to drift and the memory of God’s goodness sometimes retreats into the background. When this happens, feelings of worry and doubt often fill my mind. This is why I particularly love Jesus’ teaching from Matthew 6, where He gently reminds His disciples not to “worry.”

Are you worrying about something today? Perhaps it is your children and their academic performance. Perhaps it is a parent who is ailing. Perhaps it is a financial situation. Perhaps it is your marriage or a close relationship. Whatever the source of your anxiety, Jesus reminds us that He cares for and provides for you. And this is a reminder that we all need to hear!

“But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. So do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will bring worries of its own. Today’s trouble is enough for today.” Matthew 6:33-34
