Reflections on Psalm 23

Heavenly Father, You have given us such peace in our hearts and assurance of Your presence in the 23rd Psalm. You alone are the Shepherd of each of us. You provide for our needs. You give us strength, comfort and healing. You anoint us with Your healing oil even in death so that we are made whole and healthy in your presence. You give us so much that our cup overflows with your blessings. You protect us in the journey of our life even in the valley of the shadow of death. Your mercy surrounds us and we will dwell in Your house forever. Amen

The Lord is my Shepherd; (That is relationship.) I shall not want. (That is nourishment.) He maketh me lie down in green pastures. (That is rest and comfort.) He leadeth me beside the still waters. (That is refreshment.) He restoreth my soul. (That is healing.) He leadeth me in the paths of righteousness (That is direction.) for His namesake. (That is purpose.) Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, (That is guidance.) I will fear no evil (That is protection.) for Thou art with me. (That is faithfulness.) Thy rod and thy staff, they comfort me. (That is courage.) Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies. (That is hope.) Thou anointed my head with oil. (That is consecration.) My cup runneth over. (That is abundance.) Surely, your goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, (That is assurance and grace.) and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever! (That is salvation.)

While I cannot recall a funeral I had the privilege of officiating that did not use the 23rd Psalm—because it is so reassuring and calming at a time of grief—there is so much to it that is worthy of our reflection. This psalm, like so many of the psalms, reminds us of the life we have in and with God and all its benefits.
