VBS, Why?

Soon, the St. Martin’s Campus will be filled with hundreds of children ready and excited to attend Vacation Bible School (June 8-11). When they arrive, they’ll hear the music, see the decorations, and walk through the doors in their spiffy new VBS T-shirts and be ready to roll!

But the one thing they won’t see is the long hours, many meetings, texts, emails and phone calls that shaped the final experience. Our Children’s Ministry team, Staff, and countless volunteers work together to make this four-day, power-packed adventure possible. No matter how incredible the music and decorations are, behind the scenes is the hard work of dedicated people who get the why.

These dedicated individuals understand that the big why behind VBS is about Jesus and Him alone! In an article for The Harold of Truth, P. Hostetler wrote, “Jesus well knew what a blessing the gospel is to the people and what people are without it, and as his love goes out to all people, he was anxious that all should have the opportunity to enjoy its benefits.”[1]

Sure, VBS is high-energy and a ton of fun, but the "why" goes beyond flashing lights and glitter crafts. Those who make VBS happen care deeply about the formation of our youngest disciples and the proclamation of the Good News that changed the world forever.

Consider the account from the Gospel of Mark before Jesus ascended: “And he said to them, ‘Go into all the world and proclaim the gospel to all creation.” (Mark 16:15) May I encourage you to take a moment to pray a blessing as well as ask God to send strength to these incredible individuals the week of VBS?

I’m full of praise to work alongside those who have answered the call that Jesus commanded so long ago. May we all be faithful to go into all the world and proclaim the life and work of Christ. And who knows, you may even have a blast while you’re at it!
