How Firm is Your Foundation?

“I will show you what someone is like who comes to me, hears my words, and acts on them. That one is like a man building a house, who dug deeply and laid the foundation on rock; when a flood arose, the river burst against that house but could not shake it, because it had been well built. But the one who hears and does not act is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. When the river burst against it, immediately it fell, and great was the ruin of that house.”
Luke 6:46-49

When I read this passage from Luke’s Gospel, I think of the first line from one of my favorite hymns, “The Church’s one foundation is Jesus Christ her Lord.” (The Hymnal 1982, 525) We live in an age of special interests. There are groups that focus on different ideas and interests that cater to those with like mindedness. People tend to look for groups that focus on those narrow topics that are important to them. One can even do this with finding a church – there are physical fitness churches and coffee shop churches. Even here at St. Martin’s, you can choose between worship with traditional music or contemporary music. You can choose a worship time to fit your busy schedule – early morning or evening or several times in between. However, the foundation of all our lives and our worship is Jesus Christ our Lord, as we hope it is at every Christian church as it is here at St. Martin’s. It is easy to lose our focus, to concentrate on style and the desire to fit church in where we can around all the other important things in our life.

The most important thing, though, is to have a firm foundation, to anchor our lives in the worship of Jesus Christ. When that foundation is solid, it will not crumble when a flood of bad times arises. When your spiritual house is built on the firm foundation of Jesus Christ, it will be strong and support you through all the difficulties you will encounter in life. I invite you to think about that today.
