Spirit of the Living God

We are in the middle of Lent. In the remaining days of this special season of the Church year, I invite you to pay particular attention to certain words that follow in this devotion. Sit with them, pray each word and reflect on them by asking, “Where am I in relation to this word or that one?”

The words of which I speak come from the hymn, “Spirit of the Living God.”

Spirit of the living God fall fresh on me
Melt me, mold me, fill me, use me

Soul of Heaven, Heart of God, Wash over me
Cleanse me, teach me, hold me, reach me

Holy Presence, Love Divine, cast out my fear
Shield me, free me, call me, lead me

These are the “words” I invite you to consider:

“Melt me, mold me, fill me, use me
Cleanse me, teach me, hold me, reach me
Shield me, free me, call me, lead me”

Between now and Easter 2022, I extend a daily invitation to you, with seriousness of intent, to pray about the above words. Each of them speak to us and touch us in ways we can only imagine.

By the way, as you are at it, reflecting on these words, look for the Spirit in the nooks and crannies of your own life — those small tucked-away spaces where surprises happen more often than not. The sacred is part of us. The Spirit slips in, in the blink of an eye. The Holy and the everyday are brought together.

“Come, Holy Spirit, our Souls inspire.”
