Consumer Price Index for all food rises
The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Economic Research Service (ERS) released the latest Consumer Price Index (CPI) data this week. The CPI for April 2020 decreased 0.7% from March 2020 and was 0.3% above the April 2019 level. The CPI for all food was up 1.5% between March and April 2020, and food prices were 3.5% higher than the April 2019 level.
Lower Vietnamese tariffs could boost U.S. exports
Most tariffs on dairy products and ingredients will decrease by 50% or more and frozen pork products by 10-15%.
Vietnam has signed a decree unilaterally lowering tariffs on key dairy products and ingredients, including skim milk powder, whole milk powder, cheese, milk albumin and protein isolate. It also lowered tariffs on frozen pork products. The decree goes into effect on July 10 and will last until the end of the year.

Celebrate World Milk Day (Today, June 1)
Join ADSA in celebrating World Milk Day. On June 1st, milk lovers around the world will celebrate dairy for World Milk Day 2020. World Milk Day was first launched in 2001 by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) to celebrate and increase public awareness about the nutritional and economic importance of milk and milk products around the globe. Milk is an important source of healthy nutrients including calcium, magnesium, zinc, phosphorus, iodine, iron, potassium, folates, vitamin A, vitamin D, riboflavin, vitamin B12, protein and fat. Join the conversation on Twitter using the official World Milk Day hashtags #EnjoyMilk and #WorldMilkDay.
ARPAS Online Exams Coming Soon
Because of summer meeting cancellations and social distancing protocols, the American Registry of Professional Animal Scientists (ARPAS) is currently developing a process to offer remotely proctored online exams. This process is still under development but should be operational by mid to late June. More information will be available on the
ARPAS website by June 11. Graduate Students: Please note, the ARPAS Foundation pays exam fees for graduate students taking the ARPAS exam for the first time.
Sad News about ADSA Past President Norman F. Olson
It is with great sadness that ADSA announces we have learned that ADSA Past President (President 1985-1986) Norman F. Olson passed away on May 10, 2020. He was born in Edmund, Wis., on Feb. 8, 1931, the son of the late Irving and Elva Olson. He served in the United States Army as a lieutenant from 1953-55. Following his military service, he obtained a Ph.D. at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, in 1959. The next 40 years were spent as a professor in the Food Science Department at the University of Wisconsin. His research focused on the chemistry, microbiology, and technology of cheese products, food fermentation and microbial metabolism in foods. He served as a reviewer of research papers for several scientific journals. In 1975, he was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship at the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore in Piacenza, Italy. Norman was instrumental in organizing the Center for Dairy Research at the University of Wisconsin and served as its first director from 1985-1993. Norman is survived by his wife, Darlene, who he married in 1957. He is survived by two children, Kristin (Richard) Bransford and Eric Olson, and three grandchildren, Daniel and Sarah Bransford, and Anika Olson. Memorials can be made to the UW Carbone Cancer Center, Bethel Horizons Camp in Dodgeville and the Ice Age Trail Alliance in Cross Plains, Wis. Please share your memories at

The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM) anticipates the 2021 release the 8th revised edition of the "Nutrient Requirements of Dairy Cattle", the world's most highly cited reference on dairy cattle feeding.
The 40th Discover Conference will focus on the scientific advancements in dairy cattle feeding used in revising the 2001 edition. NASEM subcommittee members will address the substantive changes in the nutrient requirements and the conceptual approaches used to make those changes. They will report on areas with significant knowledge gaps that still prevent more accurate prediction of the nutrient requirements. We will emphasize the interactive spirit of Discover conferences with structured small group discussions woven into the program, including focused discussions with the speakers. The program will bridge from the fundamental science to applied dairy cattle feeding.
