Advocates for Science sought
We appreciate the people who have replied to the invitation from the FASS Science Policy Committee (SPC) to join in our advocacy for science. Just a reminder the SPC is looking for animal scientists with an interest in public policy to become volunteer members of the committee. We seek to assure that the members of the committee represent a diversity of species, disciplinary expertise, and food animal products/processing. The SPC meets and communicates primarily by conference call and e-mail. Committee appointments are for three years with an option to renew for a second term. Dairy industry begins plotting path forward
U.S. dairy industry leaders said the sector continues to focus on the immediate needs of domestic consumers and producers due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but the discombobulation of the supply chain and resulting demand and consumer behavior changes will need to be analyzed before the industry is able to fully understand how to plot a path forward.

Michigan dairy processing facility still on track
Construction of MWC, a large dairy and cheese processing plant partnership of Glanbia Nutritionals, Dairy Farmers of America (DFA) and Select Milk Producers Inc., is still on track to begin operations this fall, the Lansing State Journal reported.
Martha Kavanagh, a spokesperson for Glanbia, told the news outlet that the project's budget hasn't been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, although she did say "some delays" occurred at the site in the St. Johns, Mich., industrial park. "It's on time and on plan, is what I'm told," Kavanagh said.


Dairy farmers, Pizza Hut celebrate class of 2020 with free pizzas
Dairy Management Inc. (DMI) and checkoff partner Pizza Hut announced that they are joining forces to give away a half-million pizzas to class of 2020 high school graduates.

"We are so excited to partner with Pizza Hut to help high school seniors and their families celebrate this special milestone in their lives," said Marilyn Hershey, a Pennsylvania dairy farmer and chair of DMI, which manages the national dairy checkoff. "This is a shining example of what we accomplish when dairy farmers and importers build relationships with a company such as Pizza Hut through our checkoff."

Dairy Science Digest Podcast featuring content from 
Journal of Dairy Science (JDS)
The University of Missouri Extension Dairy Team in collaboration with ADSA's  Journal of Dairy Science, has launched Dairy Science Digest; a new podcast series to share the latest research in dairy science through 25-minute interviews.

The first episode features lead author Casey Havekes, discussing the effects of molasses-based liquid feed supplementation to a high-straw dry cow diet on feed intake, health, and performance of dairy cows across the transition period.

NASEM Nutrient Requirements
of Dairy Cows

The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM) anticipates the 2021 release the 8th revised edition of the "Nutrient Requirements of Dairy Cattle", the world's most highly cited reference on dairy cattle feeding. The 40th Discover Conference will focus on the scientific advancements in dairy cattle feeding used in revising the 2001 edition. NASEM subcommittee members will address the substantive changes in the nutrient requirements and the conceptual approaches used to make those changes. They will report on areas with significant knowledge gaps that still prevent more accurate prediction of the nutrient requirements. We will emphasize the interactive spirit of Discover conferences with structured small group discussions woven into the program, including focused discussions with the speakers. The program will bridge from the fundamental science to applied dairy cattle feeding.
