Spotlight of the Week
This week, 8th graders have been exploring the phenomenon of physical and chemical properties of substances. They had to identify the two substances in a mystery mixture by observing the characteristics of the interactions that occur when they mix pairs of known substances. Students wrote a conclusion in a form of a claim concerning the identity of the substances in the mixture and used several points of evidence involving comparison of experimental substances.

On Friday, grade 8 students were in the science lab discussing gases and air. In our previous lesson, students combined citric acid, sodium bicarbonate and water to create a gas and captured it. On Friday, their focus was to determine if air (gas) is matter. "Does air have mass and take up space?" In order to determine if air has mass, the class came up with the idea to measure the mass of a volleyball when it was flat. Then, inflate the ball and see if the mass increased. It did, and they confirmed that air has mass.
Students then used syringes in a closed system to discover whether or not air took up space. By observing the compression and expansion of gases in the closed syringe system, they were able to determine that air does, in fact, take up space!

The Daley Cross Country Teams had an amazing race Thursday at Shedd Park and the coaches couldn’t be any prouder. Despite the inclement weather, the boys had 19 top 50 finishers while the girls had 14. The boys won first place overall with Maric N. winning with a first-place finish. Brandon I. and Nate R. shortly after in 5th and 6th place. Jake M. entered in the top ten for the first time this season. Other contributors were Max G., Matthew S. and Michael C. The girls competed really well with Skylar B. finishing in 9th, Charlie F., Grace S. and Mia C. came in right after that. Natalia A., Ava P. and Cindy S. also pushed through to help the team result in a third place overall finish.
Congratulations to the 40 students who made it to the championship meet! Coach gave those students a paper with specific practice and event times, so please be on the lookout.
Thank you to all Cross Country Students for all of your hard work and dedication this season. The coaches hope to see you next season!
